Royal Society Photo Contest Winners Capture Breathtaking Details Of Our Rapidly Changing World
From a swirling dance of mating mayflies to a lone clownfish swimming amongst a field of bone-white sea anemones, the top photos chosen for the Royal Society Publishing’s second annual nature photography contest showcase small but significant moments in a rapidly-changing world. While these images might not seem earth-shattering, their subtle subjects inspire new ways of looking at the natural world.
Special commendation. “Butterflies and caiman” by Mark Cowan.
Colourful butterflies gather on the head of this caiman to collect salt – an important mineral for their survival. This photo was taken while on a scientific expedition to the Amazon to study reptile and amphibian diversity. The expedition was led by researchers from the Herpetology Division at the University of Michigan and included participants from Peru and Australia. A number of minerals are a scarce resource throughout Amazonia and so this behaviour allows these invertebrates access to salt, much like the clay licks that are used by a variety of vertebrates. This particular phenomenon where butterflies and bees congregate on the heads and around the eyes of caimans and turtles has been documented before but what is unique here is the simultaneous number of butterfly species and the way in which each species is associated with its own kind. This Powerful Photo Series Inspired By Brock Turner Will Make You Think
Brock Turner was sentenced to six months in June of 2016 for sexual assault. But only three months later he was released. In today’s society, sexual violence is dismissed as quickly as its perpetrators. It’s no wonder assaults go severely underreported. How can statements like “It was only 20 minutes of action” lead to so much inaction? We believe justice can’t be served until the sentence matches the severity of the crime.
Yana Mazurkevich, a 20-year-old student at Ithaca College in New York, decided to create a photo series about Brock’s release and its message is shockingly powerful. Continue reading »

As part of FLAIR Melbourne – a Flinders Lane art festival – Melbourne’s Lisa Minogue presents stylised photographic portraits of Australian women of colour, their faces painted vibrantly to accentuate their individuality and encourage the viewer to study each face more closely. Minogue asked each woman the same question: “What do the words “coloured girl” mean to you?”.
Ayah. “When I was at primary school, all these kids would touch my hair and rub my skin to see if the colour would come off. I would think, “It’s just skin … what do you expect?”. Continue reading »

The photos are reminiscent of the classic Where’s Waldo picture book series, and Redditors have similarly dubbed SeeYourGypsy’s challenge as ‘Find Fido’. Continue reading »

Neringa Rekasiute’s “We. Women” Photo Project Places Women In the Throes Of A Major Fear — And Is An Ode To Raw Self-Love
What is a beautiful woman? Our media is full of images, attempting to construct what a perfect woman should look like. Sexualisation and standartisation of a female body in the media have direct negative consequences in the society. Objectivisation of body encourages the society to focus on physical appearance of women instead of embracing their personality and inner feelings. As a consequence, about half of women are dissatisfied with their bodies, which leads to a number of psychological and health problems. Continue reading »

A Fascinating Photo Project About The Reflection We Want To See In The Mirror
It’s human nature to desire and, at the same time, be afraid of change. But as technology becomes more advanced, we now have a great opportunity to contemplate changes in our appearance without worrying that the consequences will be permanent. With the help of a retouch artist’s capable hands, you can experiment with your appearance: create an incredible hairstyle or even change your skin tone. Sometimes, this impartial perspective can help you understand that when one of your personal traits disappears, you can lose your individuality. Maybe you’ll even become a different person.
Polly: ‘I’ve always wanted to have narrower cheekbones, full lips, and a darker skin tone. And thick hair. I think I would be a real beauty!’
Bright Side offered a group of brave people the chance to take part in a photo project that highlights these issues. They explained their ideas for their ideal appearance to a retouch artist and asked them to make them happen. We suggest you take a look at the result and try to find ten differences. Continue reading »
