Gestural Abstraction.
Are you up to talk a lil “Gestural Abstraction” today?
Many of you certainly know that the style was widespread from the 1940s until the early 1960s, and is closely associated with abstract expressionism.
Let’s throw down some names of the big guys from those good old days — Norman Bluhm
? James Brooks? Jackson Pollock? Philip Guston? Michael Goldberg?
Ok now let’s find out why was so important that days. That thing called “The context”.
It is essential for the understanding of gestural abstraction to place it in historical context, because only like that art makes sense. A product of the post-World War II artistic resurgence of expressionism in America and more specifically New York City, action painting developed in an era where quantum mechanics and psychoanalysis were beginning to flourish and were changing peoples perception of the physical and psychological world; and civilization’s understanding of the world through heightened self-consciousness and awareness.
Ok ok, I know. I’ll not bore you further and go back to our days.
Today a friend of mine pointed me to the work of his friend Stefano Pedrini, who draws his inspiration from that art movement of the 40s and the 50s. For not knowing his work (but I have trawled briefly his website) I don’t want to say too much on that, but I like his work and I also like to let readers make their own opinion. Here’s the work of Stefano Pedrini (2012) So if any of you have any request or want to buy something don’t hesitate to contact him at his email: info@stefanopedrini.com
