Disused Jets in U.S. Air Force ‘Graveyard’ given New Lease of Life by World’s Best Graffiti Artists

A cemetery of disused war planes in the scorching Arizona desert has been given a new lease of life – as part of an art project.
‘The Boneyard Project’ resurrects disused warplanes that lie in the famous Boneyard in Arizona by letting graffiti artists paint them. More than 30 of the world’s best urban artists worked on five ruined US Air Force jets, vividly bringing them back to life with paint and colour.

There is what the manufacturers describe as an ‘autonomous power supply based energy system’ powered, both day and night, by a noiseless wind energy system, as well as more than 120 m2 of solar panels making the most use of daylight. Chinese Submersible ‘Jiaolong’ Dives to 22 851ft in The Mariana Trench

Jiaolong, 蛟龙, in Chinese folklore, is a shape-shifting water dragon. The Chinese government has been quietly testing a new submersible, named Jiaolong, designed to dive to 22 965ft (7,000 meters). It was the second dive for the vehicle, with another four scheduled to achieve the country’s first 7,000-metre dive. Xu Qinan, the submersible’s chief designer, told China Daily that it was still undecided whether the craft would try for 7,000 metres in the third dive. Continue reading »

Sotheby’s to Auction Working Version of First Apple Computer Model

The Apple l, the first Apple computer made by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976, is seen on display at Sotheby’s on June 8, 2012 in New York City. Sotheby’s called the computer “an exceptionally rare, working example with original Apple cassette interface, operation manuals and a rare BASIC Users’ Manual”.

The computer was an integral component to the the personal computing revolution; it is set to be auctioned on June 15, 2012 and is expected to earn between $120,000 and $180,000 (the computer first went on sale in July 1976 for $666.66). When originally sold, the monitor, keyboard and cassette interface were sold separately. ‘Stacked’ Space Station Photos Highlight Star Trails

A scientist aboard the International Space Station took extraordinary photos of the starscape from aboard the vessel, using a special technique that highlights their movement. Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit used long exposures in conjunction with digital editing to achieve the star-trail effect. Given that some of the shots required nearly 15 minutes of exposure, Pettit needed the software to overcome the limitations of his camera. Continue reading »

The “Super Brain” Phone Cabin

This Super Brain cabin by artist Carla Pires de Carvalho Fernandes is a part of a series of artistic interventions in public telephone booths in the city of São Paulo, similar to the interventions of the Cow Parade that took a few years ago when they put more cows painted and decorated all the way in various parts of the city.

Several hoods are receiving special decorations and paintings exhibited in the open leading art and color to the city. The call Call Parade invited 100 artists to perform works in 100 public telephone booths in preparation for the change of visual identity of the licensee Telefónica for Vivo, when the hoods will have different colors.
