Mine Kafon Project by Massoud Hassani
The Mine Kafon is a low-cost wind-powered mine detonator with the appearance of a giant spiky-armed tumbleweed.
Currently it is at a prototype stage and we are looking for support in order to turn it into a reality. If successful, we will be able to develop the prototype and test it in real minefields. Filmmaker Callum Cooper will also produce a documentary that will raise awareness on this global issue.
MINE KAFON is a Winner in the $200,000 FOCUS FORWARD Filmmaker Competition, and is vying for the $100,000 Grand Jury Prize, to be announced January 22 at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. It has also been recognized as an Audience Favorite. Learn more about the Competition and FOCUS FORWARD at focusforwardfilms.com Continue reading »

Dutchman Launches Life-sized Replica of Noah’s Ark
If the world floods, whether from an angry God or climate change, Johan Huibers is ready. After 20 years of work, the Dutchman has completed a full-sized replica of Noah’s Ark as described in the Bible, the AP reports. He followed Biblical instructions precisely to create a boat 427 feet long and 75 feet high, which he has filled with a menagerie of stuffed and plastic animals, as well a petting zoo with live animals and an aviary of exotic birds.
Huibers, a Christian, says he started building the boat after a nightmare in 1992 in which floods once again overwhelmed his low-lying homeland. He doesn’t believe that God is planning to flood the world once more, but he hopes his ark will “make people question that so that they go looking for answers” and find them through God, he says. The ark is open to visitors and Huibers plans to take it to other European ports and possibly even to the US. Photos by AP Photo/Peter Dejong. Continue reading »

Camera Van: The Art Car by Harrod Blank
One night In the fall of 1993, Harrod Blank had a dream in which he covered his car with cameras and then drove around and took pictures of people on the streets. The public, unaware that the cameras worked, reacted naturally. At the end of the dream, Harrod looked at pictures taken with the van of faces frozen in the moment of awe, pictures so powerful that the next morning he decided to attempt to build such a vehicle in reality.
With the help of Dan Lohaus and some other friends, Harrod spent the next two years designing and building the van. With a lot of trial & error, the van was completed in 1995 and made it’s debut voyage in April leaving his home in Berkeley California, stoping in Houston and New Orleans and ending up in New York City where he would live and take pictures with the van for the following six months. IKEA Store in Bloomington Has Gone Solar
Minnesota has deployed its largest solar PV array so far and it sits atop IKEA in Bloomington. The 142,000 square foot, 1,014 kW system, was built with 4,316 panels and will produce approximately 1.2 million kWh of clean power annually – the equivalent of reducing 801 tons of carbon dioxide. IKEA worked with Xcel Energy and SoCore Energy for the development, design and installation of the customized solar power system.
The 1-megawatt system is the largest solar array in Minnesota. It generates the equivalent of the power needed by 100 homes, or roughly the output of one small wind turbine. The Bloomington store marks the 31st U.S. solar project for Ikea, with eight more locations in development. The company said it has invested $590 million in renewable energy projects around the world. Continue reading »
