Color Portraits Of Immigrants At Ellis Island
Many of the 12 million people who entered the US through New York’s Ellis Island wore traditional dress from their homelands. The early 1900s images by chief registry clerk Augustus Francis Sherman have been brought to life by colorists at Dynamichrome. The photos will form part of a book called The Paper Time Machine, by Wolfgang Wilding and Jordan Lloyd, which is currently being crowdsourced.

Fake Swiss Chalets That Were Actually A Secret Military Weapon
Christian Schwager first began his project on “Fake Chalets” back in 2004 when people began noticing these false homes. Upon further investigation, it turned out that these quaint little structures were actually some of Switzerland’s best kept military secrets. These fake chalets were fully militarized bunkers. It’s estimated that over 250 were built back in WWII and some are still being discovered to this day. Though the buildings look false when you walk up right next to them, they’re tricky enough to deceive even the locals from a distance. Each chalet is a little more narrow that it should be. The windows, woodgrain, and even the sun’s reflection were painted on. The rule here was that the chalet should be able to deceive the eye from a minimum of 20 meters away. So far, Schwager’s series of photos has captured a little over 100 of these disguised bunkers. Continue reading »

Rescue ‘Fortress’ In Tanzania Protects Albinos From Human Hunters
The rescue centres in Tanzania protect albino people from the vicious hunters who sell their body parts to witch doctors. Photojournalist Ana Palacios, 43, visited the centre in Tanzania three times between 2012 and 2016 to find out more about the plight of albino people. Persecution of albinism is rooted in the belief that the body parts can transmit magical powers, however, they are also ostracised by those who believe that they are cursed and bring bad luck. The Tanzanian government has been forced to set up special centres to protect people with albinism from harm.

This Artist Creates Impressive Paintings By Using His Boxing Gloves

When he creates art work, Omar Hassan doesn’t get out paint brushes. He gets out his boxing gloves. Hassan, a 29-year-old artist and boxer, has combined his two passions, with the goal to bring the disciplines closer. Hassan, born in Milan to an Italian mother and Egyptian father, creates the works by dipping his glove in paint, and punching the canvas stretched over cardboard to keep it from breaking. He calls the series “Breaking Through Milano.” His paintings sell from 8,000 to 40,000 euros, which he calls “a great satisfaction, but not the goal”. Continue reading »
