The Scandinavian Peninsula is one of the most breathtaking landscapes of Northern Europe, and the Norwegian fjords, carved out by millions of years of coastal erosion, are among the most mysterious and naturally beautiful features of the region. History abounds in these narrow, steep-sided inlets, which wind like great arteries around the coastlines of Norway and neighbouring Sweden, concealing the secrets of years gone by. It was on the Swedish side of one of those countless fjords that the then 60-year-old hulk of the cargo ship MS Hamen rusted quietly beneath the tree-lined cliffs, before finally being rescued. It all started in December 1954, when the then 22-year old soldier Bill Perlmutter boarded a troopship to Germany, to start his new assignment as a photographer for the U.S. Army. The first images from Perlmutter’s Rolleiflex were taken during the rough transatlantic voyage. Even though he had never left the United States and was a bit apprehensive about his future, Perlmutter was “looking forward to photographing Europe and visiting all those wonderful places that I had read about and seen in the movies.” His first leave after his deployment to Augsburg Germany, brought him to Paris, the city of light and home to many of his favorite photographers. goCstudio have designed the wa_sauna, a privately owned sauna, designed and built to be used year round on Seattle’s Lake Union. The 240 square foot sauna is a registered vessel, powered by an electric trolling motor with three 12-volt batteries, and is heated by a wood burning stove. Inside, there’s enough room for 6 people.
