Anthropocene Mapping: The Human Influence On Earth
Defined according to Wikipedia it is “a recent and informal geologic chronological term that serves to mark the evidence and extent of human activities that have had a significant global impact on the Earth’s ecosystems. The term was coined by ecologist Eugene Stoermer but has been widely popularized by the Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen.”

Bruce Campbell’s Boeing 727 Home Project
Bruce Campbell doesn’t just love planes, he lives inside of one. After purchasing a a Boeing 727-200 for $100,000, he placed it in his backyard, otherwise known as the middle of the woods in Oregon. Campbell’s startup costs were actually quite considerable. He paid $17,000 to move the plane from an airport to a staging site, $20,000 to rent the staging site for four months, $21,600 to remove the wings and tail, and $25,000 to finally move it to his house. Einstein: The World’s Smallest Horse
The World’s Smallest Horse according to Guinness World Records is Thumbelina from Missouri, but another tiny horse named Einstein may take her place when he turns 4, which is the minimum age required for the record. Einstein is from New Hampshire and unlike Thumbelina, he doesn’t have any dwarvish features, he has the same proportions as any other horse – he’s just much much smaller.
Einstein is only 35 cm tall (14 inches) and weighs 2.7 kg (6lb). Thumbelina is 44.5 cm (17.5 in) tall, so even if Eisntein grows a little, the chances of he becoming the official smallest horse in the world are quite high. He was born in April 2010, so he still needs to wait for almost 2 years until he becomes eligible for the title. Continue reading »

An Extraordinary New Family of Spiders from Caves in the Pacific Northwest
These undated photos from the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco show the fearsome claw of a new family of spider, which led to naming it Trogloraptor, or cave robber. A group of amateur spelunkers found it in a cave outside Grants Pass, Oregon in 2010. They sent specimens to the Academy, where scientists had never seen anything like it. Since then, scientists have found a related species in the Redwoods of Northern California. The discovery is described in an article published Friday in the online edition of the journal Zookeys. The Coolest University Dorm that You Can Imagine
Tietgenkollegiet or The Tietgen Residence Hall in Denmark is the coolest dormitory that you can imagine. The circular building has a very modern-looking yet well-thought design perfect both for studying and leisure.
The dormitory has 360 spacious rooms shaped as a pie slices. Their wide end facing the outer side of the building has either a big balcony or a French window. Each room has a toilet and a shower with a heated floor. There are comfy lounges and big kitchens shared by every 12 apartments. Tietgenkollet has a bike park, a large hall, movable bars for parties, quiet rooms for reading and studying and two music rooms with a piano and a drum set. Continue reading »

Two Look Books, Two Countries, Two Minds: Akomplice in Brazil Summer Lookbook
Akomplice presents their Summer 2012 lookbook dubbed “Empty and Whole ”. Shot in the remote backdrop of Florianopolis, Brazil. The collection of photos are a visual portrayal of the human mind devoid of the memories that create: control, patterns, and fear. The outcome is freedom to be one with the moment. The ethos behind the collection, which extends to Akomplice as a brand is that one is not to be governed by the past but by the moment, free from the constraints of past triumphs or traumas. To add authenticity to the lookbook and the sentiment it connotes, it was stated that two of the members involved were coming down from an LSD trip.
Furthermore, Akomplice co-founder Mike Smalls had recently returned from 10 days in Abadiania, Brazil where he meditated for 5-10 hours daily. The models, male and female are wearing Akomplice Mens apparel including a range of woven shirts, lightweight jackets, twill patterned shorts, contrast t-shirts and tanks which are juxtaposed against the Brazilian sand dunes. Models were also outfitted in a collection of accessories including premium leather belts, 5 panel hats and card holders. The entire collection is now available at Akomplice retailers worldwide. Two Look Books, Two Countries, Two Minds: Akomplice in Colombia Summer Lookbook
For the 2012 Summer lookbook, Akomplice co-founder Patrick Liberty set sail for South America to capture a background befitting of the collection. The setting was the Poblado section of Medellin, Colombia which reflects the raw thematic direction of the Summer line. The 2012 Summer offering from Akomplice is expressed by its unique material selections, and diverse offering of hats, contrast pocket tees, and button ups that naturally appeal to the skate, bike, and tattoo communities. Those cultures are precisely who was tapped into for the shoot.
With the help of the locally heralded streetwear and skate sanctuary, Poisen, Patrick assembled an authentic group of brand protagonists to document the lookbook over the course of 5 days. Shot by a local Colombian photographer and inspired by the disposition of the people of Medellin, the 2012 Summer lookbook captures the evolution of Akomplice. The lookbook puts the curated collection on display and depicts it in the germane environment of Medellin that has adopted Akomplice as its own. Continue reading »
