How Do Perceptions Of Beauty Vary Across The Globe?

0

According to website Online Superdrug Doctor: “From that simple question, the idea for this study was born. We asked female graphic designers from around the world to Photoshop a female form by making her, in their opinion, more attractive to other citizens of their country. Widely held perceptions of beauty and perfection can have a deep and lasting cultural impact on both women and men. The goal of this project is to better understand potentially unrealistic standards of beauty and to see how such pressures vary around the world.

The resulting submissions are intriguing.” Continue reading »

Arie van’t Riet’s Colorized X-rays Emphasize Natural Beauty

“As a physicist I specialized in radiation physics. Especially in very low energy X-rays. Some years ago I started to use these experience in X-ray photography. An amazing kind of black and white photography. Looking with X-ray eyes to nature. That’s what I like to experience with my X-ray camera. I prefer X-ray objects of ordinary scenes like a butterfly nearby a flower, a fish in the ocean, a mouse in the field, a haron along the riverside, a bird in a tree and so on. Each time it is challenging me to arrive at an X-ray photograph that represents the sentiment of the scene, do raise questions and excite curiosity. I hope, in most of the images presented here I succeeded.” – Arie van’t Riet. Continue reading »

A Scary Side of Beauty Culture

The series will also be shown at (e)merge art fair in Washington, DC and Pulse Art Fair in Miami Beach.”

To some plastic surgeons, a naturally stunning woman looks more like a work-in-progress. What does this somewhat terrifying reality say about the state of beauty in our culture? That’s what photographer Marc Erwin Babej wanted to explore in his new series, “Mask Of Perfection”. Babej worked with his close friend, plastic surgeon Maria LoTempio, to illustrate the difference between a woman’s natural beauty and the “correctable flaws” a plastic surgeon has been trained to see. Boynton Beach Peacocks: When is Beauty Bad?

Anybody want a peacock? How about 200?

The Fox Hollow community in Boynton Beach is considering paying a trapper $6,000 to round up half the neighborhood population of peafowl and kill them.

“I want every one of them out of here,” said resident Dorothy Laswell. “They bang on my French doors, throw themselves at my windows, and wake me up every morning, jumping on my roof at 6 o’clock. And during mating season, they scream and holler.”

Similar complaints have led Fox Hollow to invite a trapper to spend weeks in the neighborhood assessing the population and figuring out what can be done. There are an estimated 400 peafowl living in Fox Hollow, and they have their defenders. So the homeowner’s association is considering a compromise of sorts: eliminating half the bird population.

They apparently escaped years ago from nearby Knollwood Groves, where they were an attraction until the groves were torn down for another housing development. Continue reading »

Satellite of Love: Vanishing Beauty of Japanese Love Hotels

Love hotels, nowadays they’re calling them “fashion hotels,” they’re calling them “boutique hotels.” What times are these we’re living in?

We Japanese are generally reputed to be “good at copying,” yet for some reason we seem to exercise the highest level of erotic originality in the world. From sopu “soaplands” (bathhouses) and imekura “image clubs” (costume role-playing) and deriheru “delivery health” (call-a-massage), mainstays of the sex-hire industry, to hi-tech adult toys, to lust-and-violence manga comics and pick-a-girl fuzoku magazines, the Japanese creative spirit would seem to be fixated on things erotic. And of course, there’s interior design’s erotic “true north”, the love hotel. Continue reading »
