Törmänen was thrilled to meet a school of inquisitive European perch on her annual snorkel in Honkalampi lake. In the previous three years she had found only dead fish. She framed the fish flying through clouds of pink-tinged algae. Although it created a beautiful scene, excessive algal growth, a result of the changing climate and warming waters, can cause problems for aquatic wildlife as it uses up oxygen and blocks out sunlight. For the 18th year, Washington Posts Travel asks readers for their best photos. This sampling shows that the contest has some stiff competition.
“The combination of earth, sky and light in this location is simply magical”, wrote Mark Franko about his submission taken in Arizona’s Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. “It is no wonder why the Native Americans hold this place sacred”. Built in complete darkness, a complex city is being constructed. A wild swarm of Honeybees (Apis mellifera) arriving in the spring, is developing natural wax comb formations to support the colony’s future larvae, and food storage. When this colony is at it’s strongest, it will eventually divide. The majority of the bees swarming to a new location with the queen and begin the process of reproducing all over again, thus spreading their genes farther. Entries of the Scottish Seabird Centre’s Nature Photography Awards
The Scottish Seabird Centre is a visitor attraction in North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland. Opened by Charles, Prince of Wales in 2000 and funded by the Millennium Commission, the showpiece of the centre is the network of cameras which beam back live pictures from the bird colonies on islands such as the Bass Rock and Fidra. The local abundance of gannets, puffins and more has been described by Sir David Attenborough as one of the “Twelve Wildlife Wonders of the World”.
