Breathtaking Underwater Photograhy By Tim Davis

“My biggest fear is that I will become stagnant and stale so staying near the edge if not hanging over it is where I want to be most days.” says photographer Tim Davis about his work. Perhaps this is why he got so into underwater portraits–because so few people do them. Continue reading »

Wildlife Photographer Of The Year: Unforgettable Underwater Photography

These are the most memorable underwater images from the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. They have been specially selected for this unique book from the hundred of thousands of images received over the last 50 years. The collection gives us a glimpse into an often unseen world containing many strange and beguiling creatures. Each image is accompanied by a story from the photographer, explaining what the image means to them and how they were able to capture it. This portfolio reveals a spectacular panoply of life, which is as diverse and colourful as anything found on land.

Wildlife Photographer Of The Year: Unforgettable Underwater Photography
Big blue mouthful by Doc White. “This picture was the first ever to show, full frame, a blue whale with its throat pouch expanded, the pleats forced open by the engulfment of a gargantuan amount of water and shrimp-like krill. Having lunged through the krill swarm, the whale is expelling the water, forcing it through the massive sheets of hair-like baleen material, which hang from its mouth. To find large enough aggregations of krill, a blue whale is forced to travel great distances. But when a large swarm is located, the lunge-feeding technique is highly energy-efficient”. “Suichu Ni-so” (“underwater knee-high socks”) is a photography series by Manabu Koga devoted to — you’ve guessed it! — young ladies diving under the water wearing knee-high socks (and swimwear too, of course). Up-and-coming underwater photographer of the year – winner. “Roar” by ManBd (Malaysia). Location: Yos Dive Lembeh house reef. While the photographer was shooting these three nudi a moray eel suddenly appeared out of the blue totally changing the composition. As the judge noted: “the result is a superb demonstration of blur which I would never have believed would work against the three nudis. The soft left eye of the moray together with the gleaming white teeth towards the bottom round off this image”. (Photo by ManBd UiDive/UPY 2018) Continue reading »

Gabriel Barathieu / UPY 2017
“In the lagoon of Mayotte, during spring low tides, there is very little water on the flats. Only 30 cm in fact. That’s when I took this picture. I had to get as close as possible to the dome to create this effect. The 14 mm is an ultra wide angle lens with very good close focus which gives this effect of great size. The octopus appears larger, and the height of water also. Photographed off Mayotte Island on May 7, 2016.” Continue reading »

Cape Tarkhankut, Crimea is a home of an unusual underwater museum. In 1992, diver Vladimir Borumenski installed the first sculptures of Soviet leaders at a depth of 50 feet. Sculptures were already dismantled in the Crimean cities and towns, so it was kind of a recycling project. Borumenski planned to complete the Soviet museum, with sculptures of Mao Zedong, Mussolini and Napoleon, but didn’t follow through. Here: Pink Gagarin. Continue reading »

Underwater Photographer Jordi Benitez Castells Captures Jellyfish Off Spanish Coast

Jordi, 40, from El Vendrell, Spain, was in Catalunya when he took the photos and managed to get the snaps at about three metres below the surface in most cases. While he works full-time in a bank, Jordi dons his wetsuit out of hours to go diving and uses a Canon 7D to get his shots. Here: One of the beautiful jellyfish. Continue reading »

Behaviour category runner-up. What Feed Beneath by Alejandro Prieto (Mexico). “I entered the cold November water to photograph a pair of humpback whales … swimming back to the boat I saw a small moving object in front of me; it was a Hawaiian petrel submerging its head to feed on the tiny crustaceans. Under normal circumstances as you get close it will fly away, but surprisingly instead of this it just kept feeding in front of me. By approaching very slowly I was able to get close from beneath, thankfully it stayed there for a few moments allowing me to capture this behaviour”.
