Atmospheric Black and White Photographs of Paris by Night in the Early 1930s
In the early 1930s, Brassaï, the pseudonym for Gyula Halász, captured the essence of Paris at night through stunning black-and-white photographs, showcasing both its elegance and its underbelly.
Arriving in Paris in 1924 at age 25, the Hungarian artist quickly mingled with notable figures like Picasso and Dalí. Initially reluctant about photography, Brassaï embraced it, revealing the city’s nightlife, from its glittering landmarks to its gritty streets. His work featured a range of subjects, from high society to the city’s marginal figures, and depicted scenes of labor and leisure under the glow of gas lamps and neon lights, showcasing the dual nature of the City of Light.
