The Lotus Esprit, a sports car produced by Lotus Cars from 1976 to 2004, featured a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, it was known for its straight-lined, wedge-shaped “folded paper” design. The Esprit’s chassis was also used for the DeLorean car.

The Esprit evolved through various updates, including a significant restyling by Peter Stevens in 1988, resulting in the softer-lined “Stevens Esprit” (X180). After 28 years, the Esprit was among the last cars with pop-up headlights, alongside the 5th generation Chevrolet Corvette.
