In the late 1970s, Tina Turner, embarking on her solo career after leaving her abusive marriage, teamed up with designer Bob Mackie to craft her iconic stage image.

Turner wanted an operatic look, leading to stunning designs like Mackie’s flame dress and daring outfits that highlighted her famous legs. Mackie’s creations, often featuring bold slits and built-in trunks, showcased her powerful presence and strut, embodying the freedom and joy she radiated as a solo star. Reflecting on their collaboration, Mackie admired Turner’s ability to electrify audiences, saying, “She generated such joy—and that’s what entertainers should do.”
