Where Moths Lecture and Dragons Preen: The Intricate Folk Illustrations of Hataya

In Saitama, Japan, the artist known as Hataya (ハタ屋) crafts a fantastical universe through intricate pen and ink illustrations.

Her creations include surreal beings like cat-people with multiple eyes, bird-headed dragons, and scholarly moths, all inhabiting richly detailed environments. These settings—filled with vintage architecture, lanterns, and cryptic artifacts—give her imaginative creatures a sense of realism and depth. Hataya describes her process as drawing from a singular, expansive world in her mind, rather than telling a specific story. Each piece invites viewers to explore further, offering glimpses into a coherent yet endlessly mysterious realm.
