SKATEISTAN: TO LIVE AND SKATE KABUL
Skateistan: To Live And Skate Kabul is a beautifully shot film that follows the lives of a group of young skateboarders in Afghanistan. Operating against the backdrop of war and bleak prospects, the Skateistan charity project is the world’s first co-educational skateboarding school, where a team of international volunteers work with girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 17, an age group largely untouched by other aid programmes.

Cat Cafe
It all began in 2004, when the first cat cafe opened its doors in Osaka. Since then, the petting zoo/coffee house hybrids have invaded Tokyo, and business is booming. After removing your shoes and washing your hands, you can relax or play with the cats and kittens while you have your drink. Prices are reasonable, and the rules are simple: no flash photos, no grabbing tails or waking sleeping kitties. Continue reading »

Highly Visual RSS Reader
Highly Visual is a new kind of RSS reader designed for creative individuals.
Almost all RSS readers are designed in a similar way: left/right column split – which is great for reading news, but not so great for viewing visual content. Highly Visual presents feeds in a beautiful, clean, scrollable grid view. No more countless taps to get from item to item. Inspiration is never far. The directory offers a maintained list of hand-picked feeds with categories from architecture, art & design, to fashion, food, and photography.

A Comparative View of the Human and Animal Frame
A Comparative View of the Human and Animal Frame by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins was published in 1860. This work fits into the second category of materials on the History of Science and Technology Web site, that is, unique or valuable titles in science and technology held by the UW-Madison Libraries. Hawkins’ intent was “to give a comparative view of the variation in form of the bony skeleton or framework of those animals most frequently required by the artist, designer, or ornamentist.” The animals represented are some of the most familiar and important, such as the lion, the horse, the bear, the gorilla, and others. The textual explanations of variation in animal form did not yet reflect the influence of Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory, but the detailed illustrations added much to the understanding of mammalian anatomy.
