“Mercury Ahead!”: The BepiColombo Mission Has Captured Its First Views of Planet Mercury
The closest approach took place at 23:34 UTC on 1 October at an altitude of 199 km from the planet’s surface. Images from the spacecraft’s monitoring cameras, along with scientific data from a number of instruments, were collected during the encounter. George Hendrik Breitner (12 September 1857 – 5 June 1923) was a Dutch painter and photographer. An important figure in Amsterdam Impressionism, he is noted especially for his paintings of street scenes and harbors in a realistic style: wooden foundation piles by the harbor, demolition work and construction sites in the old center, horse trams on the Dam, or canals in the rain. Breitner saw himself as “le peintre du peuple”, the people’s painter, and preferred to work with working-class models: laborers, servant girls and people from the lower class districts. Japanese photographer Kishin Shinoyama has dedicated his practice to exploring intimacy and the human body, as well as documenting his home place of Tokyo. His sensual photographs often depict the body within the architecture of the city or conversely, the inherent sculptural qualities of the naked human form. Shinoyama was born in 1940, in Tokyo, Japan. He studied in the Department of Photography at Nippon University and was awarded the Advertising Photographer’s Association prize. Although the animals are no longer slaughtered as before, the attraction of continuous food supply changes their migratory path and in some cases the animals spend months rather than weeks here before continuing to their breeding grounds. The Royal Observatory Greenwich has announced the winners of its 13th annual astronomy photographer of the year competition, with the £10,000 (about $13,793) top prize awarded for a beautiful photo of a solar eclipse titled “The Golden Ring.”
Shuchang Dong has been crowned the overall winner of Astronomy Photographer of the Year for this mesmerising photograph The Golden Ring. The image shows an annular solar eclipse taken in the Ali region of Tibet on 21 June 2020. Continue reading »

The Drone Photo Awards have announced the 2021 winners. The contest’s categories include Wedding, Nature, People, Urban, Animals, Abstract and Sport for single still images. Among these categories are many fantastic photos from talented photographers around the world.
Melting Ice Cap. Nature Commended. In summer 2020, Svalbard archipelago broke meteorological records when the air temperature suddenly reached 21.7ºC. This image brings evidence of the amount of fresh water falling from the melting Austfonna ice cap into the sea. The average air temperature in Svalbard has risen by 3-5°C over the past 50 years.
