Great Portraits Of Ireland And The Irish At The Turn Of The 19th Century

Four boys at the Rocking Stone at Islandmagee, County Antrim.1870

Ireland in the late 19th Century was all boulders, rocks, pigs, plus fours, mud and stoicism. Well, it is if these photographs of the period are our guide. For people of great wit, anecdote and gab, the subjects look remarkably glum. You can detect a hint of merriment in the eyes of the cricket team, one or two of the lifeboat men are chipper and a member of the Waterford bicycle club is breaking ranks with an insouciant smirk. But either the photographer waited for his sitters to grow bored and sullen before capturing the moment for whatever agenda was being pushed – a clear association of people and the rugged milieu; an Irishman’s mien as grey as the skies and rocks – or else he got them all on a bad day. From The Depths Of Your Nightmares – The Fantastically Disturbing Creepy Art Of Trevor Henderson

One of my favorite things happening on the internet is this series from Trevor Henderson, which mashes real photographs with drawings of original monsters and wraps them together in found footage-style packaging. “Found footage” is typically a filmmaking style, of course, but Henderson’s photo-drawings cut out all the filler and get right to the goods. Artist Creates Surreal Images That Balance Between Reality And Imagination

ur imagination is what keeps our busy minds entertained, but it’s sometimes so surreal that it can’t be explained with simple words. Here’s where technology comes in handy. Dreamlike worlds and eccentric environments where anything is possible can actually be visualized when masters of digital art work their magic. And whether the result is realistic or out of this world, whether it’s meant to entertain or provoke thoughts, we are often mesmerized and would gladly exchange our casual routine to experience the extraordinary. The Golden Age of Flying: A Look Back On Air Travel In The 1950s And ’60s

The 1950 and 1960s have become known as the “Golden Age” of flying. It was a time of glamorous air hostesses and gourmet meals, and of great leg room for all.

Delta Airlines

While it might have become known as the Golden Age of flying, taking to the air in the 1950s and 1960s had its downsides. For a start it was much more dangerous, and far more expensive. Then there was the smoke from all those cigars, cigarettes and pipes. And, once you’d looked out of the window there was not a lot to do but twiddle your thumbs. But there were upsides to flying back then too – like ever-flowing drinks and a party atmosphere.

These old photos will give you a glimpse into the air travel during this era. Continue reading »

This Instagram Account Reveals Scenes From Famous Movies With And Without Special Effects

We know very well that cinema is just a carefully crafted play of illusions. Often movies and TV shows of genres such as fantasy and science fiction demand a substantial sacrifice of realism and logic from viewers, all for the sake of enjoyment. And that suspense of belief cannot be achieved without top-tier visuals that give us mythological creatures, computer-generated monsters, and futuristic scenarios. Continue reading »
