Designer Matteo Ugolini, together with Italian lighting manufacturer KARMAN, have created these fun and whimsical indoor or outdoor lights that represent forgotten tools.

Photographer Michael Massaia Captures Haunting Images Of Central Park When No One Is Around
During his mid 20s, Michael Massaia developed a terrible case of insomnia. In order to give himself a break from sitting around all night “staring at the walls,” he began to go on long walks. Massaia grew up in New Jersey but became enamored with New York City during his late-night strolls, when the city was less congested and fewer people were around. Thankfully, the self-taught photographer took his camera along, creating the series “Deep in a Dream, Central Park.”
Massaia worked a series of “crappy” jobs, including stints in movie theaters and warehouses, before finding photography. Continue reading »

Behold: the largest vertical garden in the world. Located in Bogota, Colombia, the Santalaia building is completely covered with a lush layer of 85,000 plants that span 3,100 square meters (33,368 square feet). A vertical garden of this size can produce enough oxygen for more than 3,100 people every year, process 1,708 pounds of heavy metals, filter more than 2,000 tons of harmful gases and catch more than 881 pounds of dust. Danish retailer Vipp has created a factory-made, metal-and-glass micro dwelling that comes filled with the company’s line of homeware products. A Neural Network Invented A Bunch Of New Paint Colors That Are Hilariously Wrong
At some point, we’ve all wondered about the incredibly strange names for paint colors. Research scientist and neural network goofball Janelle Shane took the wondering a step further. Shane decided to train a neural network to generate new paint colors, complete with appropriate names. The results are possibly the greatest work of artificial intelligence I’ve seen to date.
Writes Shane on her Tumblr, “For this experiment, I gave the neural network a list of about 7,700 Sherwin-Williams paint colors along with their RGB values. (RGB = red, green, and blue color values.) Could the neural network learn to invent new paint colors and give them attractive names?”
By the first checkpoint, the neural network has learned to produce valid RGB values – these are colors, all right, and you could technically paint your walls with them. It’s a little farther behind the curve on the names, although it does seem to be attempting a combination of the colors brown, blue, and gray.
By the second checkpoint, the neural network can properly spell green and gray. It doesn’t seem to actually know what color they are, however. Continue reading »
