Meet The Tree That Actually Bleeds When It’s Sliced Open
The bloodwood tree (Pterocarpus angolensis) is a deciduous tree with a high canopy, reaching about 15m in height and has dark bark. The red sap is used traditionally as a dye and in some areas mixed with animal fat to make a cosmetic for faces and bodies. It is also believed to have magical properties for the curing of problems concerning blood, apparently because of its close resemblance to blood. Chinese Province Spends $73M To Reproduce Century-Old ‘Ancient Town’
Construction on the Guiyang ancient town project in Hunan province began on Feb. 13, China News reported. The project was undertaken with an investment of 500 million RMB ($72.8 million). The cultural site, occupying 2,160 mu (144 hectares) of land, features pseudo-classic architecture including a Guiyang Confucius Temple, Kun Opera house, museums, ancient stages and commercial streets. French photographer Marilyn Mugot longs for dépaysement. The word doesn’t have a direct English translation; some dictionaries define it as “disorientation” or “a change in scenery,” but the artist describes it simply as “this feeling of being far away from home.” And she found it in China. Mugot shoots after dark because the light is “untamable.” When the moon comes up, she’s free and unbridled to wander the streets of cities she doesn’t know. The Liberian dancing devils assume the role of bush devils, spirits that originate from the spiritual world of the ‘Poro’, or ‘bush’. The communities they belong to have long been a part of the culture of certain ethnic groups that constitute present-day Liberia. In the Poro context, the dancing devils are not regarded as evil— they have the ability to inflict punishment on individuals, though this is only used to bring order to society. The devils used to dance only at traditional festivals, though with the arrival of the freed and freeborn American settlers in the 1800s, they brought their dance to imported Christian holiday celebrations such as Christmas.
