This 72yo Slovenian Artist Creates Beautifully Carved Egg Sculptures
Slovenian artist Franc Grom, aged 72, makes unbelievably intricate egg sculptures using just a tiny electric drill and enormous patience. According to National Geographic, when finished, each egg contains approximately 2,500 to 3,500 holes. While Slovene artisans usually paint their eggs using a technique called drsanka by lightly scratching intricate patterns into the surfaces of colored eggs, carving them was solely Grom’s idea. Greeting cards are a dicey affair, either they’re sentimental or there’s a joke with a big—often unfunny—punchline. This is why I prefer my messages with a little black humor in them. You know the person giving you the card loves you, so it’s just fine if you give or get a little abuse in with the bargain. (Cards given in a semi-obligatory way in an office context don’t count.) Vanishing Point: Lithuanian Artist Makes Trolleybuses Disappear Using Optical Illusion Art
Though not as common in North American cities, many European metropolises have extensive trolleybus systems. As part of the Vilnius Street Art Festival in Lithuania, artist Liudas Parulskis executed an ingenious project that made the city’s trolleybuses disappear. In collaboration with creative place-making agency Studio Vieta, Parulskis took blown up photographs of city streets and architecture and wrapped entire trolleys, creating an illusion of the urban landscape on the moving vehicles. When he creates art work, Omar Hassan doesn’t get out paint brushes. He gets out his boxing gloves. Hassan, a 29-year-old artist and boxer, has combined his two passions, with the goal to bring the disciplines closer. Hassan, born in Milan to an Italian mother and Egyptian father, creates the works by dipping his glove in paint, and punching the canvas stretched over cardboard to keep it from breaking. He calls the series “Breaking Through Milano.” His paintings sell from 8,000 to 40,000 euros, which he calls “a great satisfaction, but not the goal”. Continue reading »
