Five gargantuan oaks, one of which is said to have provided the inspiration for the fantasy land of Narnia, and a spectacular ‘portal rowan’ are among the unique specimens in the running to be crowned the Woodland Trust’s tree of the year for 2022.
Waverley Abbey yew, Farnham, Surrey
A truly spectacular yew, with roots that grow into and around the ruins of Waverley Abbey – the first monastery founded in Britain 900 years ago by the reforming Cistercian religious order. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, the abbey was dismantled. It is a beautiful tree with roots that sprawl out above ground before plunging into the earth. Its multi-stemmed form is dotted with holes, crevices and areas of decay that provide a habitat for other species. Age: The exact age is unknown but it can not be more than 480 years old. The Nature TTL Photographer of the Year winner has been chosen from more than 8,000 images from all over the world. From a scarred lion getting its close-up to a fish with a mouthful, entrants competed to secure category wins in wild portraits, animal behaviour, camera traps, underwater, the night sky, small world, landscapes, urban wildlife and under-16, with the overall winner chosen from the category wins.

The V&A Has Announced the Winners of Its 50th Annual Illustration Awards
2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the V&A Illustration Awards. Established in 1972, they have since become the UK’s most prestigious annual illustration competition. Free to enter, the Awards celebrate excellence in student illustration and three categories of contemporary practice: book cover design, book illustration and illustrated journalism.

Wayne Quilliam’s Silent Strength, a photograph of Aurukun man Eric Yunkaporta, has won the 2022 national photographic portrait prize. Quilliam says the capture of Yunkaporta in ceremonial headwear is akin to a trickle of water merging into a small stream, then into the ocean.

As Melbourne struggles through many days of restrictions, with limited options to play and learn for the kids, four-year-old astronaut Mia puts on her homemade space suit and helmet and goes on exploration missions in the familiar neighbourhood, using her imagination to turn the mundane world around her into an exciting adventure. ‘Documenting the Ukrainian village from which my family were taken by Nazis in 1942 – I’m the first of my family to ever go back. The village has witnessed great horrors: epidemics, famines, invasions and murders. The focus was my relief to find such a welcoming and colourful place. A wonderful Ukrainian community that didn’t echo my Black Sea German ancestor’s dark history. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has turned all that on its head.
