Over the years, Mattel’s famous Barbie dolls have been made as nurses, celebrities, supermodels, athletes and other inspiring figures. Surprisingly, one of the world’s most successful TV franchises ever, Friends, never had a Barbie treatment…. Until now!
The Toy Zone asked concept artist Margarita Zhitnik to try to imagine what Friends characters would look like if they were Barbie dolls, and she delivered just the thing. They’re loaded with clothes, props, and references from the most memorable scenes, and in my opinion, as one of the die-hard fans of the show, I think they turned out awesome. Let’s pray Mattel will heed our prayers and make it real someday!
“Ahead of a date with the comically named Elizabeth Hornswoggle, Ross decides to experiment with leather pants. He looks surprisingly okay in them – when he can get them on. But it’s pure torture for Chandler, who has bet Ross $50 that he can last a week without making insults.” Continue reading »

Trophy Wife Barbie is divorced. She drinks wine, smokes weed, and owns a massive arsenal of pink guns. She vomits, bleeds, and goes to the bathroom. She breastfeeds in public, has transgender friends, and frequently gives the finger. Oh, and she has antlers sprouting from her head.
In other words, Trophy Wife Barbie is nothing like the real Barbie. Continue reading »
Surely David Bowie is one of those people who deserve the title of genius. We know that all the adjectives that can be bestowed on him are not enough to describe one of the personalities and one of the most radical and enormous talents known in the world of culture and the arts. Bowie has spent his life creating beautiful works and revolutionizing the world in so many ways, it’s getting hard to count. Continue reading »

“Poor Barbie. She had plastic surgery to become more socially acceptable. But a lot of her critics still don’t like her. Barbie’s manufacturer, Mattel, announced Thursday that the doll has three new body types – curvy, tall and petite. Barbie will also now come in seven skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles. Mattel spokeswoman Michelle Chidoni said the product is evolving to “offer more choices” to make “the line more reflective of the world girls see around them”. Josh Golin, executive director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, said Barbie’s changes are a testament to activists who for years have challenged her “unrealistic and harmful body type”. But body type “was only one of the criticisms”, he said. “The other was the brand’s relentless focus on appearance and fashion”. Aside from whether Barbie’s looks will ever measure up to society’s changing expectations, another question worth asking is whether kids still want to play with Barbies. Barbie sales fell 14 percent in the most recently reported quarter, with worldwide sales falling every year since 2012”. – Beth J. Harpaz via The Associated Press. Continue reading »
A Brazilian woman who has been likened to a ‘human Barbie’ claims her appearance is natural and she hasn’t had plastic surgery or starved herself to be thin. Andressa Damiani, from Blumenau, who has a 20-inch waist and wears a 32F bra size, boasts the same facial features as a doll – including huge eyes and long legs. The 23-year-old has found fame in her native country with passers-by on the street calling her ‘Elsa’ because of her resemblance to the character in Disney’s Frozen. Continue reading »

In deconstructing Barbie dolls and repurposing them as jewelry for “Plastic Bodies Series,” the designer Margaux Lange forces us to enter an uncomfortable space between disgust and worship of the iconic toy. Barbie, who has been a target of the last decades’ feminist debate, occupies an ambiguous role in the social and sexual development of girls; she exudes sexuality with her adult figure, but she also remains virginal, never revealing her nipples or genitalia. Artist Nickolay Lamm, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, recreated the iconic Mattel doll using proportions of the average 19-year-old woman, according to the CDC. Continue reading »
