A Rare Look Inside North Korea
North Korea has closed its borders in fear of the spread of the Ebola virus. But at a time when the secretive state was still welcoming tourists, former aid worker Andrew Macleod made the journey to the repressive nation. Andrew’s holiday snaps and camera footage provide a unique insight into the reclusive country, where he came across deserted motorways, metro stations plastered with propaganda and attractive border guards. Inside the Ebola Hospital
A woman lays dead outside the Redemption Hospital on Saturday September 20, 2014 in Monrovia, Liberia. Ebola patients come to the hospital, which has become a transfer and holding center to intake Ebola patients, but there is no space and some die while waiting outside. Redemption is located in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Monrovia that locals call “New Kru Town”. Health workers are overwhelmed with a constant stream of new patients since the Ebola outbreak. On Friday there were 102 ebola related patients; nine died overnight and Today the hospital has 107 patients. Nine Ebola related deaths occurred overnight Friday but with Saturday admissions they are now holding 107. Liberians have been living under most extreme conditions as the Ebola virus worsens. Life Inside One of the Largest Favela in Rio de Janeiro
“A favela is the term for a slum in Brazil, most often within urban areas. The first favelas appeared in the late 19th century and were built by soldiers who had nowhere to live. Some of the first settlements were called bairros africanos (African neighbourhoods). This was the place where former slaves with no land ownership and no options for work lived. Over the years, many former black slaves moved in.
Even before the first favela came into being, poor citizens were pushed away from the city and forced to live in the far suburbs. However, most modern favelas appeared in the 1970s due to rural exodus, when many people left rural areas of Brazil and moved to cities. Unable to find a place to live, many people ended up in a favela. Census data released in December 2011 by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) shows that in 2010, about 6 percent of the population lived in slums in Brazil. This means that 11.4 million of the 190 million people that lived in the country resided in areas of irregular occupation definable by lack of public services or urbanization, referred to by the IBGE as “subnormal agglomerations”. – Wikipedia

Inside Iceland’s Crystal Ice Cave
Shimmering clearest blue and stretching as far as the eye can see, this is one of Iceland’s famed crystal ice caves. The giant solid waves look frozen in time but they are slowly moving along as part of the Vatnajokull Glacier – which stretches across eight per cent of the island. The images were captured in February 2014 by British photographer Rob Lott.

Sunland Baobab – A Bar Inside a Hollowed Out Tree
Sunland Baobab is a well-known enormous baobab in South Africa. The tree is located on Sunland Farm, near Modjadjiskloof, Limpopo Province. The Sunland Big Baobab is renowned because in its hollowed trunk there is established a bar and a wine cellar. The tree has been carbon dated and is estimated to be around 1000 years old. Inside the World’s Biggest Tree House by Horace Burgess
Located in Crossville, Tennessee, the Minister’s house is the world’s biggest tree house, and was built by Horace Burgess. It is 97 foot tall (3om), 10-story high, uses 6 trees as its foundations, and took over 14 years to be built. “I built it for everybody. It’s God’s treehouse. He keeps watch over it,” said Burgess, who got inspired in 1993 after a vision. “I was praying one day, and the Lord said, ‘If you build me a treehouse, I’ll see you never run out of material.” Cost of construction you might ask? $12,000! The beds are made up, but this abandoned mansion has not had an occupant sleeping in its grand rooms for years. The tenants at the Round Mansion in western Belgium are long gone, but the bedrooms are still occupied by expensive furniture and ornaments. These serie photographs were captured by London urban explorer Andre Govia, after he decided to start documenting his love of abandoned buildings.

Inside Facebook’s Data Center Near the Arctic Circle
On the edge of the Arctic Circle, where the River Lule meets the Gulf of Bothnia, lies a very important building. Facebook’s newest data center – in Luleå, Sweden – is now handling live traffic from around the world. Facebook claims Luleå is likely to be one of the most efficient and sustainable data centers in the world. All the equipment inside is powered by locally generated hydro-electric energy. It is 100% renewable and they have been able to reduce the number of backup generators required at the site by more than 70%. Continue reading »

Photo of the Day: With a Screaming Man Inside
In this image released by Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, doctors have spotted what looks like the face of a screaming man in an ultrasound of a testicular tumor. The startling image jumped out at them while scrolling through scans of a 45-year-old patient suffering from severe testicular pain. The picture went viral after it was published in the journal “Urology” and it’s been compared to sightings of the Virgin Mary on toast or grilled cheese sandwiches. Teddy Bears that have been Turned Inside Out and Restuffed
Bears by Kent Rogowski, is a series of portraits of the most unusual sort: ordinary teddy bears that have been turned inside out and restuffed. Each animal’s appearance is determined by the necessities of the manufacturing process. Simple patterns and devices never meant to be seen are now prominent physical characteristics, giving each one a distinctly quirky personality: their fasteners become eyes, their seams become scars, and their stuffing creeps out in the most unexpected places. Together these images form a topology of strange yet oddly familiar creatures. They are at once hideous yet cuddly, disturbing yet endearing, absurd yet adorable, while offering a metaphor for us all to consider. These bears, which have lived and loved and lost as much as their owners, have suffered and endured through it all. It is by virtue of revealing their inner core might we better understand our own. A narco submarine is a type of custom-made ocean-going self-propelled semi-submersible vessel built by drug traffickers to smuggle drugs. They are especially known to be used by Colombian drug cartel members to export cocaine from Colombia to Mexico, which is often then transported overland to the United States.
