Seeing spots: Yayoi Kusama Exhibition at Tate Modern
The polka dot-obsessed octogenerian artist Yayoi Kusama’s work has gone from free love and foraging in the 50s and 60s to infinity rooms filled with mirrors and twinkling lights in this decade. Her life has seen body parties in Andy Warhol’s Factory and friendships with Georgia O’Keeffe, Donald Judd and Joseph Cornell – and this retrospective takes it all in. Close-up of Japanese contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima’s installation work titled ‘Mega Death’ in Beijing. Using LED counters, computers, electrical circuits and projection videos that cycle through the numbers one to nine, Miyajima’s installations express his core artistic concepts derived from the Buddhist philosophy of ‘Keep Changing’, ‘Connect with All’, and ‘Goes on forever’, symbolising a vast realm of existential possibilities, the eternal nature of space and time, and the infinite cycle of life, death and rebirth. Artist Cain Motter Illustrates Impact of Credit on Modern Society
Los Angeles-based artist, Cain Motter, like many others, has tried to share his opinion about the impact of using credit cards on the modern society. However, his mode of expression is quite different because unlike others who use words or letters for expression, Motter melts his credit cards to create stunning pieces of modern art.
In his official Facebook page, Motter explains how he fell for the vicious cycle of using credit cards.
“I started getting these credit card applications in the mail. One of them said it would be good to have a card in case of emergencies. That’s what got me,” the artist stated. After applying and receiving his first credit card, he got a cheque for $50 which he thought was a gift for becoming a new customer.
It was only after he received his first statement with a bill for that $50 gift plus cash advance fees that he understood the trick.
To “take revenge” and give vent to his anger, Motter first started craft pendants and necklaces using the cards. Continue reading »

Sean Henry‘s sculpture Man with Cup (2008) is exhibited on the West Front of Salisbury Cathedral on August 2, 2011 in Salisbury, United Kingdom. The exhibition, ‘Conflux: A Union of the Sacred and the Anonymous’, features over 20 contemporary sculptures of dramatically different scales occupying vacant plinths and open spaces on both the inside and exterior of the iconic 13th century building. 45°C – Modern Slaves of Dubai
“Higher, greater, more luxurious. If it was after Sheik Muhammad bin Rashid al Maktoum – and it is – Dubai will become the world metropolis of architectural wonders and records. This is only possible to achieve with the sweat of a gigantic labour army from abroad. Hundredthousands of these foreign workers labour on the constructionsites for very low vages, live pent-up in tiny barracks and seperate from their families for many years.”
This is a photographic documentary, made by photographer Florian Büttner, is about the everyday-life of the men with the unity-coloured overalls. The men outside the lap of luxury, who exist in the shadows of the skyscrapers.
“They have been the cheapest on the market and the ones most driven to abandon their rights to make a living. Circumstances made them to what they are in my eyes. Modern slaves. Not taken by force like in the old days, but forced by their lives in the arms of the highest bidder for human resources. From roughly 1 million people living in Dubai, around 800.000 are or were foreign workers. This is a new dimension in the history of foreign labours and shows one aspect of globalisation.”
