“Come and See”. True Reality of War Photos by Peter Van Agtmael
Peter van Agtmael (b. 1981) graduated from Yale University in 2003 with a degree in History. Following graduation, he spent a year in China on the Charles P. Howland fellowship photographing the effects of the Three Gorges Dam. He became a freelance photographer at the end of 2004. Since the beginning of 2006, he has documented the consequences of America’s Wars, at home and abroad. A monograph of the work, “2nd Tour Hope I Don’t Die” was published in 2009. In 2008, he helped organize the exhibition and book Battlespace, a retrospective of unseen work from 22 photographers covering Iraq and Afghanistan. He is represented by Magnum Photos
Peter Van Agtmael began his first tour documenting the army at 24, the same age as many of the soldiers. A friend of this young Marine at FOB Delhi asked Van Agtmael if he wanted to see a picture that he’d drawn. It was of an angry pig with a giant pen*s dressed as a Marine, holding a machine gun. Photographer Captures Fantastic Photos of New York Reflected in Glass

Tornado Captured in Couple’s Wedding Photos
A Saskatchewan photographer captured some striking images of a couple on their wedding day when a funnel cloud touched down in the distance during a photo shoot Saturday.
Professional photographer Colleen Niska was taking photos of a bride and groom on a rural road near Saskatoon when she noticed the twister in the distance, and kept snapping away. Niska posted the stunning images on Facebook, saying said she’d only “dreamed” of capturing such images.

Rare Photos of Angola’s Tribal People
Photographer Eric Lafforgue travelled to Angola and met some of the fascinating tribal peoples living there.
Men, by contrast, leave jewellery and elaborate hairstyles to the women, instead choosing to wear a simple loin cloth paired with a dagger or, in some cases, old 1990s football jerseys. The jerseys are a symbol of changing times in Angola; a country where huge oil wealth is concentrated in the hands of a privileged few while the rest of the country struggles to come to terms with the aftermath of the Angolan Civil War – a conflict that lasted for more than 30 years and left the countryside littered with landmines.

Shocking Lightning Photos in Fujian
A man kicks football as if he is performing under a blitz of lightning at Heshang county, Changle, East China’s Fujian province. The villagers have recently been using “lightning experiment” developed by some locals. Some may mistake the pictures for computer synthesizing, but actually they are not. After Facebook assumed the former Sun Microsystems complex in Palo Alto in 2011, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg set out to find an architect capable of handling a grand design for its main main headquarters building. Zuckerberg chose world famous architect Frank Gehry for the job. At more than 435,000 square feet, spread across 22 acres, the new building dips and rises from 45 to 73 feet. Couple Poses With Gas Masks For Their Wedding Photos To Protest Heavy Pollution In China
A couple of Chinese newlyweds decided to take their wedding photos in a dark and striking direction to protest their country’s out-of-control pollution. The two lovebirds took their wedding photos wearing gas masks to shield themselves from Beijing’s clouds of toxic smog.
The smog in Beijing is now so thick that it is blocking sunlight despite recent announced closures or production cuts at 147 of the city’s industrial plants. He Dongxian from China Agricultural University’s College of Water Resources and Civil Engineering, has even compared its effects to that of a nuclear winter. Continue reading »

China’s ‘Jade Rabbit’ Rover Lands on Moon – First Photos
China landed an unmanned rover on the moon, making the Asian nation the third country after the US and the Soviet Union to touch down a spacecraft on the lunar surface.
The probe, carrying a rover dubbed Jade Rabbit that will survey the moon’s geology and natural resources, landed at about 9 pm Beijing on Saturday, the Xinhua News Agency said. China’s achievement comes 47 years after the Soviet Union performed a soft landing of its Luna 9 spacecraft on the moon.
The launch is part of the Asian nation’s growing space exploration ambitions, an effort which has seen the country spend billions of dollars even as other nations cut back. For its next step, China wants to land a lunar rover and return it to Earth in 2017, according to Xinhua. Continue reading »

Unseen Photos of the 1965 Rolling Stones
An exhibition at Los Angeles’ Dilettante gallery showcased 23 rare photographs capturing candid moments of the Rolling Stones on their 1965 American tour. The photos that make up ‘Found: Photographs of the Rolling Stones’ were only recently discovered in an unmarked box at a Southern California estate sale. The exhibit marks the first time these images have been shown to the public.
Shot in Savannah, Ga., and Clearwater, Fla., in the spring of 1965, the pictures show the now legendary rock group in their youth, relaxing as the British Invasion of rock swept the States. The collection shows the carefree innocence of the Stones, along with their founding member and road manager Ian Stewart, just when they were on the verge of superstardom. Continue reading »
Then-and-Now Photos of Abandoned Detroit School
To “raise awareness of the social and economic challenges the city of Detroit,” the folks at Detroiturbex decided to tell the story about an abandoned Lewis Cass Technical High School with the help of superimposed then-and-now photos. First, they photographed every room the old Detroit school, which was abandoned after a 2007 fire. Then they put the pictures of the buzzing life from the past on top of them.
These sad pictures are a mirror of today’s Detroit. The city has suffered tremendous population increases and then rapid declines. Today, Detroit is designed for 2 million people, however, less than 1/3 or ~ 700 thousands have remained in the city. The infrastructure, built at the time of the population boom, stands abandoned, run down and an easy target for arsonists.
The city is in need of the change, and such projects definitely bring it one step closer. Continue reading »

‘Stacked’ Space Station Photos Highlight Star Trails
A scientist aboard the International Space Station took extraordinary photos of the starscape from aboard the vessel, using a special technique that highlights their movement. Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit used long exposures in conjunction with digital editing to achieve the star-trail effect. One57 Gets Glassy: Photos Of Midtown’s Newest Supertall Skyscraper
Midtown Manhattan’s much-awaited 1,004-foot One57 residential tower hasn’t topped out yet, but the first dozen or so floors have already gotten their glass façade (although some of the blue panels appear to still have their protective pastic coating). The Christian de Portzamparc-designed skyscraper, across from Carnegie Hall on 57th Street, will tower over the south end of Central Park, and will be the first major addition to the park’s skyline since Robert A.M. Stern’s 15 Central Park West, a limestone-clad throwback to the pre-war era, was completed in 2008. Extell Development is hoping One57’s six-bedroom penthouse will fetch $110 million, which would make it the most expensive single residence ever sold in New York.

Ubi-Camera Let’s You Take Photos With Your Hands
Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences are working on a device that allows you to take pictures using your hands. The small camera is attached to your thumb and let’s you frame shots using your fingers in the shape of a rectangle.
“When you draw a picture or take a photo, you sometimes form a rectangle with your hands to decide the composition. With this camera, you can take a photo using the exact same motion. You attach this device to your index finger, and form a rectangle with your finger like this. You take the photo by using the rectangle as the viewfinder, like this. When you push hard with your thumb, the shutter is pressed.”
