According to Joe Doucet: “A good number of projects begin as internal experiments in the studio. Minim is one such project. Invited to a friend’s poker night, it occurred to me while looking a the cards that there was a great deal of historical baggage and useless information in a contemporary deck of playing cards such as the repetition of the number and suit on the face of the cards. For example: How many times do you count the ten spades laid out in the center of the card vs just reading the number 10 and the spade in the upper left hand corner? Why do cards have an orientation at all when all of the pertinent information is contained in a small portion of the cards visible when fanned out? Then there’s the Medieval reference to a royal hierarchy. It seemed to me that playing cards were a great vehicle for an experiment in reduction. Continue reading »

Incredible Photo Series Shows Huge Dogs Playing With Their Tiny Toddler Pals

A photographer is launching a new book featuring 100 touching images showing the loving bond between young children and their enormous dogs. The series of pictures shows breeds such as Great Danes and Newfoundlands towering over toddlers – highlighting their mutual love for each other. Children no taller than 2ft are seen high-fiving their family pets, running alongside them and even riding their beloved dogs as if they were a horse. The extraordinary collection will feature in a book called ‘Little Kids and Their Big Dogs’ – which is all down to the work of photographer Andy Seliverstoff. Continue reading »

Camouflaged Insects: Can You Spot These Masters Of Disguise Playing Hide-And-Seek?

These tiny insects are so well camouflaged it is nearly impossible to make out their cleverly disguised forms. Canadian photographer and adventurer Paul Bertner attempted to catch the bugs in their natural habitats as part of a hide-and-seek game to show biodiversity in nature. But while Paul, a forester, now finds it easy to pick out the outline of a bug concealed in the undergrowth, he admits that spotting the irregularities in natural patterns that give the insects away is definitely an acquired skill. The world’s fastest piano player has been unveiled – a robot with nineteen fingers. The robot – called Teotronico – has nineteen digits because it is the exact number needed to play any melody or song. Teotronico’s robotic hand technology enables him to play the piano faster than any human possibly could. He can also distinguish between the speed of key change as well as play a drum machine and sing – the only robot in the world who can do all those things at the same time. The ConQuest event is the largest interactive festival of that kind. Year by year in summer, the Brokeloh Manor near Hannover.
