During a trip to Bikaner in India, photographer Jay Weinstein was near a train station when a man on the street caught his eye. Weinstein was keen to photograph the man but stopped short due to the subject’s stern and intimidating façade. After avoiding him and proceeding to capture other subjects, the man called out to Weinstein, saying, “Take my picture too!”

“Smile,” Weinstein replied before capturing his portrait. The man’s solemn expression was transformed into one that boasted a warm and radiant smile. It was at this moment that Weinstein was inspired to initiate his photo series ‘So I Asked Them To Smile’.
