Artist Signe Pierce Explores The Chaotic Beauty Of Reality And Its Natural Tefractions

The New York-based ‘reality’ artist Signe Pierce examines the ambiguous intersection between art and technology in the 21st century. Her use of exaggerated light and colour is applied to scenes of the every day as she creates a heightened realism that negotiates between the realm of art and life.

Her distinct aesthetic, which is often oversaturated, excessive, aggressive and perverse, is frequently reposted and shared via Instagram. Pierce also plays with the male gaze, which has commonly been associated with the hypersexualised and idealised women in mainstream media channels, as her self-portrayal is rooted in the art of seduction and the hyperfeminine.

Export 📲 Yourself. I’m soooo thrilled to reflexxx on Deep Web, the haute couture collection by designer @floramirandaofficial + live performance by yours truly, which made its debut last week in Paris. I wrote and performed the role of Halo, a hyperreal estate agent + cyborgian thot leader showcasing the step-by-step process of how machines can and will be trained to gain their own sentient ability to uniquely produce garments, objects, and art through the use of neural networking systems, 3D scans, point-cloud optimization, mapping and segmentation, and printing. Putting the ‘Art’ in Artificial Intelligence’ whilst exploring the Devil/Angel/God polarities of techno singularity… looking forward to sharing more of these concepts with u 🔜🕹Thank u for the opportunity @floramirandaofficial ⚡️Thank u for the thicc braid @luxelab @alittlesnippy , thank u for being my artner in crime @styledbyphil

I’m honored and excited to be the keynote speaker for @floramirandaofficial ’s SS19 haute couture presentation, Deep Web, happening this Monday, January 21st in Paris. I’ll be engaging you glitches in one of my esteemed techno lexxxures… highlighting the ways that neural networks and machine learning are bound to impact the future of fashion, creativity, and art. The presentation is invite only, but I implore you to please join us for the after party at the amazing @EP7Paris where I will be dishing a second performance in the evening— free and open to the public. Swipe right for details on the after party, and then keep swiping to see some of Flora’s incredible creations… queen of techno couture & forward-moving fashion. Flora & I have both found a muse within one another as collaborators and friends, & I’m excited to debut some new work with these shows. Hope to see all you Parisian haute hotties in the mixxx this Monday 💋

Tonight is the closing reception for my dearly beloved Tesseract show at @timessquarespace , curated by @tifzab ✨ 1500 Broadway / Enter on 43rd St / 18th Fl Public reception is from 7-10 PM, which provides a special and rare opportunity to see the show in its final form + at night, when it looks its absolute best. This picture was taken on my first night in the space, and it’s evolved to be so much more ~ bending and warping and shifting and moving through Time like a Tesseract (a 4th dimensional cube, a Time-Square, TIME²) I feel like I’ve grown a lot over the past two months of this residency as well… having time to think and reflect and respond to the ideas in my head is the greatest gift I could be given and I’m thankful to @tifzab for the opportunity. I welcome you to come check out the space, take photos, mingle with each other, and enjoy this experience with me.

Abstract Realism & Mirrored Reflexxxions for the @Vice Photo Issue ✨This image has not been altered digitally, and was shot as a reflexxxion in-camera. My conception of a ‘reflexxxion’ is basically a distorted or abstracted sign/symbol whose warped image is being altered & informed by some exterior manipulation, which creates an inaccuracy in how we perceive reality. The original form that is being abstracted (in this case, the body) is being reframed and refocused in the form of a distorted reflection. This distortion creates a perceptual dissonance that causes one to question its actual / intentional framework, which is often left unsaid, unanswered and unexxxplained in the age of hyper-saturated nü media over-stimulatrixxx. If I didn’t tell you this wasn’t digitally altered, you would never know.

I have some new work in the @vice Photo Issue which is out today. The issue’s theme is Privacy & Perception, two subjects I hold near & dear to my art. Thanks to @elizabethrenstrom & @aekholloway for working with me on this ✨ From the mag: In this series of self-portraits, Pierce is portraying herself in ways that are paradoxically abstract, digital, literal, and real. The abstracted images appear to have been digitally manipulated or liquified, but they’re not. With the exception of color correction, the photos have not been Photoshopped. Instead, she angled her camera lens toward a warped mirror, melting and morphing her body into, as she describes it, “a drippy, erotically charged Instagram thottie.” She’s asking viewers to consider the ways that real life isn’t always what it appears, and can be just as manipulative as the digital world. “If I didn’t tell you otherwise, would you have thought that this photo of a warped reflection was Photoshop? Does the fact that it was done in-camera make it any less manipulative than if it were done in post?”. The series also sees Pierce taking on the role of the bikini-clad centerfold whilst simultaneously assuming the position of the photographer, examining what it is to be the objectifier & the objectified.

Hey NYC~ I’m happy to announce that American Reflexxx will be on view at @newreleasegallery for the next few weekends (Friday-Sundays till Feb 11th), with an official opening happening this Saturday, January 20th from 6-9 PM. New Release is a former video rental store in Chinatown that was converted into an art gallery in 2015. I’ll be doing a custom light installation in the gallery in my Signe-ture style that simultaneously honors the space’s video store roots 📼 We want to invite guests to stop in on these cold winter afternoons to sit on the couch and absorb the provocative film in a lush, colorful space whilst hopefully inspiring social and political discourse amongst both friends and strangers. 💕Hope to see you at the opening this Saturday. #americanreflexxx

Last night we gave birth to the Metamedia Sculpture, a piece I’ve dreamt of actualizing for a long time, and that we banged out in less than a week. A media theory manifesto in the form of a hypermediated sculpture (Media is the Medium is the Message). Thank you to @safwat_riad for making this piece come alive with your incredible design/build and attention to detail, you are the steel structure that upholds my light. Thank you to @adidasoriginals for continuing to support my vision and helping me unlock new levels of creative possibility, and thank you to @kampgrizzly for making it all go down so smoothly ⚡️👁💕 The sculpture will be making its official exhibition debut in 2018, last night was just a preview of what’s to come 🔥
