Imagine walking into a grocery store and coming face-to-face with a giant glacier-carved boulder older than civilization itself—that’s everyday life in Haabneeme, Estonia.

Discovered during foundation work in 2014, this 22-meter-wide erratic rock was almost destroyed until locals passionately rallied to protect it. Geologists confirmed its ancient origins, and rather than demolish or relocate, developers built the Viimsi Shopping Center around it, honoring its place in the land and the community. Over time, this prehistoric centerpiece has become a beloved landmark—once jarring, now embraced, even adorned with artworks that celebrate its quiet majesty. It’s a story of deep time, local pride, and the strange poetry of finding nature’s relics in unexpected places.
