“Six Feet Deep”: Horror Nostalgia and Bizarre Beauty in the Art Works of Tyler Pennington

Tyler Pennington is an American horror, fantasy, and sci-fi artist based in Richmond, VA, recognized for intricate black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings rich in macabre details.

Influenced by a love of horror movies, comics, and monster masks from childhood—as well as EC Comics, Bernie Wrightson, and Pushead—Pennington’s work evokes the ecstatic grotesque, blending vintage engraving aesthetics with graffiti, bold typography, and fantastic creatures. His art appears on skateboard decks, metal band merch, album covers, and in zines, always channeling a feverish blend of nostalgia and subversive contemporary style. Pennington is especially passionate about translating classic horror tropes into new, densely patterned compositions, keeping the spirit of ’80s and ’90s horror culture vibrantly alive.
