Jon Juarez Turns Familiar Landscapes Into Strange, Hand-Drawn Futures That Feel Both Impossible and Uncomfortably Real

Jon Juarez is a Spanish illustrator, visual-development artist, screenwriter, and designer based in San Sebastián in the Basque Country. His work moves between hand-drawn illustration, speculative world-building, and production design; past professional collaborations listed on his public profiles include Riot Games, Blizzard, Epic, Heart Machine, Phoenix Labs, Wildlife, and the animated series Scavengers Reign.

Juarez is best known for detailed, colorful scenes that begin with familiar places — mountains, villages, cliffs, infrastructure, forests, and coastlines — before drifting into something quietly impossible. His drawings often give architecture, landscape, and machinery the same narrative weight as characters: a settlement may appear suspended on an impossible slope; an overlooked road becomes a portal; a familiar terrain turns into a speculative future. Critics have described the work as elaborate, bright, and surreal, rooted in real locations but deliberately moved beyond realism.
