Mook Phoungbut Reimagines What Design Direction Can Be When Research, Empathy, and Strong Graphic Instincts Work Together

Mook Phoungbut is a New York–based VP Design Director whose work spans branding, typography, illustration, campaigns, and digital experiences. Her practice is driven by the idea that design should be purposeful as well as visually distinctive: a strong visual system is not decoration, but a way to make culture, identity, and complex ideas easier to understand and feel.
Mook’s portfolio moves easily between global brands and culturally specific projects. She has collaborated with Microsoft, Mastercard, and Prudential, leading or contributing to work that translates major strategic ideas into clear, memorable visual languages.
For Mastercard’s Start Something Priceless, Mook helped evolve a platform that had represented the brand for more than two decades. The resulting design system uses Mastercard’s overlapping circles as an active visual device — a watermark, a framing structure, and a recognizable graphic gesture — rather than merely a static logo placed at the edge of an advertisement. For the Priceless Planet Coalition, she developed campaign look and feel around environmental action, demonstrating how a large corporate initiative can retain a warm, human-centered tone through design.
