Tattooed Lives: French Criminal Portraits from the 1930s

Long before tattoos became a language of fashion, fandom and self-invention, they were often viewed with suspicion.

These remarkable photographs come from a special 1934 issue of *Crocodile*, a bi-monthly journal published by the medical interns of Lyon’s civil hospitals. Its subject was the “physiognomy” of tattooing in France: not simply the designs themselves, but the people who wore them.

The images show sailors, prisoners, sex workers, pimps and other people pushed to the margins of respectable society. Faces, torsos and backs become pages of a rough, private archive. There are names, symbols, religious images, erotic drawings, declarations of love, bitter jokes and marks that seem to carry entire lives within them.

Behind this clinical fascination stood Alexandre Lacassagne, a physician, criminologist and prison doctor whose collection of tattooed skin and related material became one of the most unsettling archives of its era. Lacassagne called tattoos “speaking scars,” believing that they might reveal something hidden about the person beneath them.

That idea now feels deeply uncomfortable. The people in these photographs were observed, classified and turned into evidence by institutions that rarely offered them dignity or a voice of their own. Yet the tattoos resist that cold gaze.

Nearly a century later, they still feel startlingly intimate. A crude inscription, a naval emblem, a face inked onto a chest — each image is a fragment of self-expression made permanent at a time when society preferred to see its wearers only as outsiders.

These photographs are not just a record of 1930s tattoo culture. They are portraits of people who left part of their story on their skin, whether anyone around them was prepared to listen or not.
