Artist Combines Masterful Brushwork and Industrial Engineering to Make Sci-Fi Vehicles Feel Heavily Built and Battle-Tested
John Wallin Liberto, an industry veteran concept artist, digital painter, and illustrator with more than two decades shaping AAA gaming and feature film production. Known across the entertainment industry under his moniker “Capt. Flushgarden,” his work stands out for its masterful handling of natural lighting, aerial perspective, and mechanical realism across science fiction, military aviation, and rugged environment design.
Unlike 3D-heavy concept workflows reliant strictly on photo-bashing, Liberto is renowned for traditional digital brushwork. His paintings showcase a rare command of aerial perspective, dramatic cloud formations, sun glares, diffused mist, and the way light scatters across immense volumes of space.
Through popular tutorials—including deep-dive workshops on painting volumetric clouds and realistic lighting environments—he shares techniques that break down complex natural phenomena into readable value structures and color temperatures.
