Vietnam Veterans Dog Tag Memorial In Chicago
At the Harold Washington Library in Chicago is a new art installation called “Above and Beyond” featuring over 58,000 replica dog tags — one for each American soldier killed in the Vietnam War. The dog tags, each hung one inch apart, are suspended from the ceiling from a 410-square-foot rectangle. Each dog tag lists the soldier’s name, military branch and date of death. Nearby is a touch panel display that allows visitors to look up a veteran’s name and find generally where the soldier’s dog tag is hanging. It is the only memorial other than The Wall in Washington, D.C., that lists every individual killed in Vietnam. Continue reading »

Innovative Braille LEGO-Style Bricks Help Blind Children Learn To Read While Playing
The Braille Bricks project, co-founded by the Dorina Nowill Foundation For The Blind, helps blind children learn to read through play. Each block can be used like a toy by blind and sighted children alike, although for the benefit of the blind children, each block features one Braille letter. French urban artist Mademoiselle Maurice (previously), has traveled the world adding colorful artistic installations for everyone to enjoy. After studying architecture in Lyon, she worked in Geneva and Marseille, before moving to Japan, where she was in 2011, when the devastating earthquakes hit. Edouard Martinet’s Masterfully Sculpted Animals And Insects Made From Bicycle, Car And Motorcycle Parts
French artist Edouard Martinet assembles faithful interpretations of birds, crustaceans, insects, and other creatures with countless objects from discarded bicycles, cars, and household objects. A bicycle pump forms the abdomen of a dragonfly, windshield wipers serve as the legs of a fly, or the metal logos of a bicycle manufacturer are layered to create the dense scales of a fish. All the more incredible considering Martinet never welds or solders his pieces, but instead uses only screws or fasteners, selecting only the perfect components that “fit” each assemblage like a puzzle. The added texture, light and volume that the serial planes technique provides reinforces the fluidity of the pieces. All the sculptures are entirely hand cut and assembled, some of the figures have around 150 pieces and up to 500 separators.
