Lynda Barry Cartoon Art
Famed cartoonist Lynda Barry is currently showing her work from past 35 years at Adam Baumgold Gallery in the exhibition: Lynda Barry, Everything: Part I. The exhibition includes work from her seminal books as well as works that were published in Raw, The Village Voice, Esquire, Newsweek and The New York Times, among others.
Central to all her many bodies of work is Barry’s energetic line and her boisterous sense of humor. In some of her earliest works, for example, a cactus tries to seduce a woman saying, “Lola, can we be sure of anything in this crazy world? All I know are your eyes tonight and this wild beating of my heart.” For Barry, drawing and storytelling are integrated activities.

International Origami Exhibition: Showcasing a Broad Spectrum of Possibilities
Surface to Structure: Folded Forms is an exhibition of origami artwork that brings together the work of 88 artists spanning five continents to the The Cooper Union in Manhattan. The 134 works in the show encapsulate a broad spectrum of origami’s possibilities, both artistic and scientific, and push the perceptions of this art form beyond its traditional boundaries.
Surface to Structure marks the 55th anniversary of the very first origami exhibition held in the United States, which was also housed within The Cooper Union. The historic works of that seminal exhibition served as a foundation for the contemporary origami of today, which has progressed into a far greater range and complexity of styles, techniques, and genres.

Rare Photos of Angola’s Tribal People
Photographer Eric Lafforgue travelled to Angola and met some of the fascinating tribal peoples living there.
Men, by contrast, leave jewellery and elaborate hairstyles to the women, instead choosing to wear a simple loin cloth paired with a dagger or, in some cases, old 1990s football jerseys. The jerseys are a symbol of changing times in Angola; a country where huge oil wealth is concentrated in the hands of a privileged few while the rest of the country struggles to come to terms with the aftermath of the Angolan Civil War – a conflict that lasted for more than 30 years and left the countryside littered with landmines.

RainCity Housing – Benchvertising
RainCity Housing provides specialized housing and support services for the homeless. This installation was printed with UV and glow-in-the-dark ink. In the daytime, the black ink reacts to the sun and becomes legible and then vanishes in the dark. The glow-in-the-dark ink is not legible during the day, but illuminates at night.

Mixed Blood is a photographic and textual project portraying NYC and Beijing based families that include children with “mixed” races, ethnicities, and cultures. Mixed Blood questions and diffuses the historical categorization process of race/ethnicity and focuses on connective, cross-cultural experiences. The portraits and accompanying narratives illustrate the varying relationships family members have with their backgrounds, cultural context and citizenship. This unifying of race and cultures within a family unit continues to influence the evolution of American and global identity today.

New Impossibly Tiny Landscapes Painted on Food by Hasan Kale
From onion peels to kiwi seeds or even bits of chocolate, it seems any canvas is sufficient for Turkish artist Hasan Kale as long as it meets the requirement of being incredibly tiny. Hasan delights in the challenge of depicting landscapes of his native Istanbul in the most infinitesimal of brush strokes, a feat that requires the use of a magnifying glass to appreciate the details of each piece. With smoke for paint and Q-tips as paintbrushes, incredible smoke artist Jim Dingilian creates these eerie pantings in recycled glass bottles. He chooses to depict the mysterious suburban scenes for his unique creations on bottles because “when found by the sides of roads or in the weeds near the edges of parking lots, empty liquor bottles are artifacts of consumption, delight, or dread.”

French Artist Turns Everyday Objects into Playful Characters
With a creative eye, the casual observer can espy characters or faces in the everyday objects all around us. French artist Gilbert Legrand takes this a step further by painting and otherwise modifying totally mundane objects to turn them into cute characters and give them new life.
Legrand lets his active imagination soar by painting small details onto these everyday objects to help us see them the way he does. With the addition of a face and maybe some arms and legs, a paintbrush can become a mangled fox, a hinge can become a shady salesman, and a juicer becomes a woman emerging from a pool.
Hopefully, Legrand’s wildly imaginative creations will help you find the fun characters hidden all around you!

The Pugs Of Westeros: Three Pugs Re-enact Game Of Thrones
Roxy, Blue and Bono are three cute pugs from California that love being dressed up and photographed by their owners – Phillip Lauer, 57, and his wife Sue, 47. Eventually, the couple was contacted by streaming service Blinkbox with an offer to make a short video of their adorable pug trio re-enacting the iconic TV show ‘Game of Thrones’.
Since Sue Lauer is a professional photographer and designer, the family couldn’t resist the challenge. Not only did the short video turn out amazing, the pictures look wonderfully funny as well.

World’s First “Liliger” Born in US

A private zoo in Oklahoma celebrated the birth of what they call the world’s first male liliger cub. A liliger is the offspring of a male lion and a ligress. The adorable cub and his little sister make up American second litter of the rare hybrid animal. Their parents are Simba, the lion, and Akara, female liger gave birth to 3.5 pound, 11.25 inch long cubs on May 31st at the GW Interactive Zoo in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. Zoo president Joe Schreibvogel and his team of researchers say they are studying the DNA and genetics of the animals to educate the public about crossbred animals. Continue reading »
Human or Machine? Life-Like Android Robots from Japan Show Glimpses of the Future
A new exhibition entitled “Android: What is Human?” showing at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) in Tokyo will showcase some of the most realistic humanoid robots ever seen.
The three android robots include Otonaroid, an adult female android robot; Kodomorid, a human female child robot and Telenoid, a minimally designed robot. The robots are the brainchild of Japanese robotics expert Hiroshi Ishiguro, a professor at Osaka University’s Department of Systems Innovation who has been developing robots for over 20 years.
