Aizhai Bridge: World’s Highest Tunnel to Tunnel Bridge

Aizhai is the world’s highest tunnel to tunnel bridge and the fourth suspension bridge in China to cross a valley so wide it seems to be connecting two mountain ranges. The first three were the Siduhe, Balinghe and Beipanjiang 2009 bridges. Of the world’s 400 or so highest bridges, none has a main span as long as Aizhai with a tower to tower distance of 3,858 feet (1,176 mtrs). Located deep in the heart of China’s Hunan Province near the city of Jishou, the suspension bridge is the largest structure on the Jishou to Chadong expressway with a deck 1,102 feet (336 mtrs) above the DeHang Canyon. Hillary Clinton Goes Viral: ‘Texts From Hillary’ Meme Rides Wave Of Success

Hillary Clinton is best known for her political accomplishments – representing New York as a United States Senator, being a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 and working as the current Secretary of State — but now she’s become part of some neither she nor anyone else ever expected.

The celebrated Secretary of State is the star of a new internet meme in which the she’s shown wearing a pair of dark sunglasses looking at her blackberry. Beneath the photo of her looking at her blackberry is a caption of Clinton responding to someone on her phone.

The meme, called “Texts From Hillary Clinton,” has been started on Tumblr blog of the same name. The Tumblr account appears to be created in the same fashion as other Tumblr hits including “Kim Jong-Il Looking At Things” and “Garfield Minus Garfield,” which are each themed photo collections. Combo: Provocative French Street Art

On a recent trip to Chernobyl, French street artist Combo left behind something memorable: a mural of The Simpsons. Combo is known for using iconic characters to make a statement, and this image continues the trend. The nuclear power plant in the background looks a lot more menacing here, but I also think there’s something really interesting about such a happy, cheery image juxtaposed against the aftermath of a horrible tragedy. Monstrous 48-Foot Snake Related to Boa Constrictors Brought Back to Life

This 2,500-pound, 48-foot-long prehistoric snake was found near fossilized plants, giant turtles and crocodiles dating back to the Paleocene epoch, more than 60 million years ago when the world’s first known rainforest existed, and dinosaurs no longer ruled the Earth. Displayed at a new exhibition at the Natural History Museum, the massive 48-foot predator could swallow a whole crocodile without showing a bulge. Featuring a full-scale model of Titanoboa and clips from a Smithsonian Channel documentary, the exhibition delves into the discovery, reconstruction, and implications of this enormous reptile. Mock Rock: When Actors Play Pop Stars

We know that pop stars want to be actors – and vice versa. But as the new Sean Penn movie proves, actors playing pop stars can be a bad look indeed.

Phil Fisk: Everyday People

Phil Fisk’s portraits, commissioned to support the month long Circusfest 2012 at the Roundhouse, play the unorthodox and the mundane against each other to arresting effect. The staid and slightly drab “Britishness” of the settings – a windy beach, team building exercise, a council estate – is skewed by the unsettling physicality and slanted grace of his subjects. A contortionist emerges spider-like from a washing machine in a Brixton launderette; in a nursing home an elderly man’s body is borne skyward by some unknown force.

“I’ve done behind the tent, make-up stuff,” explains Fisk, “but contemporary circus performers are much more open to being given a role, so I tried to work with that.”

Taj Miami: How to Live Like a Boss for $4,199,000

One of Miami’s most unique properties, this three-story glass house, perched atop the Palace Condominium on Brickell Avenue, has a quirky cultural history. In 1981, Leona and Harry Helmsley were about to call this their sky residence when Saudi Sheik Saoud Al-Shaalan purchased the property and converted the already stunning structure to a Mughal Palace.

Unfortunately, the Sheik rarely visited this work of art he could have called home, but in 1999 international real estate developer antique weapons expert Anthony Tirri purchased the glass house, adorning it with Muslim weapons, furniture and art. Mr. Tirri has since moved on to Paris, where he has remodeled an 1135 chateau named after renowned French author Alexander Dumas.

For sale now for $4,199,000. Continue reading »

Mexican Pointy Boots: Las Botas Picudas

Photographers Alex Troesch and Aline Paley first saw the long, pointy Mexican boots on a video through Facebook. Inspired by the video they saw, the Brooklyn-based duo, who have known each other three years, traveled to Matehuala, Mexico in late January to see the boots with their own eyes.

In northern Mexico, the pointy boots trend is more about flash than fashion. “They’re worn by people who want to impress other people,” Troesch says. In fact, one boot maker they met had transformed a regular pair of shoes into pointy boots for a client who wanted to impress the jury of a dance contest. That’s how the fervor started—but not everyone is a fan. Continue reading »

Ubi-Camera Let’s You Take Photos With Your Hands

Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences are working on a device that allows you to take pictures using your hands. The small camera is attached to your thumb and let’s you frame shots using your fingers in the shape of a rectangle.

“When you draw a picture or take a photo, you sometimes form a rectangle with your hands to decide the composition. With this camera, you can take a photo using the exact same motion. You attach this device to your index finger, and form a rectangle with your finger like this. You take the photo by using the rectangle as the viewfinder, like this. When you push hard with your thumb, the shutter is pressed.”

Camera users fit the tiny square camera unit over a finger, then ‘frame’ shots using their fingers. Continue reading »
