These incredible pictures offer a window to history that exists all around.
They are the winning and shortlisted images in the Historic Photographer of the Year Awards 2020, which were unveiled today by broadcaster and historian Dan Snow and historic and cultural travel experts Trip Historic. This year’s awards called on photographers to scour their photographic archive and ‘share their most astonishing imagery of those places which dominate our past’.
Winner: Where History Happened, Palmyra, Syria. “This image was taken before the civil war in Syria at the ancient city of Apamea. I’d dragged my family out of bed early, when it was cold and dark, to ensure we were at the Great Colonnade early enough to catch sunrise and the golden hour. I’d got my timings wrong and we were an hour early so sat around wondering where the sun had gone and waiting for dawn. It was worth the wait. I felt privileged at the time to have the opportunity to visit Apamea, but even more so since the civil war damaged some of these most impressive monuments”. European Wildlife Photographer Of The Year 2019 Winners Announced
European Wildlife Photographer of the Year has announced its winners for this year, presented by The German Society for Nature Photography (GDT). The competition showcases the most awe-inspiring captures from Europe’s best wildlife photographers. Photographers from over 30 countries entered around 15,800 images to compete for a number of different categories. Judged by a panel of expert wildlife photographers, the jury selected 85 of the best images, before narrowing it down to the ultimate winners.
Overall winner: The Ghost – Eduardo Blanco Mendizabal (Spain). “Early this year I visited the nature park of Sierra de Andújar in Andalusia to look for the most endangered species of wild cats in Europe, the Iberian lynx ( Lynx pardinus). One evening I discovered a lynx right beside the road. The animal hardly took any notice but proceeded to groom itself quietly. Even the headlights of my car did not bother it. Wildlife Insight: Bence Máté (Hungary) – Red fox and white-tailed eagle, Kiskunság national park, Hungary. Over the last four winters I have spent more than 200 full days photographing from a hide, and in this time there have been only three occasions when I’ve seen a fox and an eagle together. In this instance, the fox didn’t approach the hide, but deliberately teased the birds resting on the ice. They occasionally flapped towards him, which emboldened the fox more and more – he continued to provoke the birds for about 10 minutes before vanishing into the reeds. This photo was made in my hometown, called Thiersee, a small village in the heart of the Alps (Tyrol, Austria). I had to wait till the lake thiersee, which is frozen all the wintertime, begins to melt in spring.Just for a few days you can see these natural patterns in the melting ice. But not without a drone. So I told my daughter to make a boat trip with her red kayak. Till now nobody in my hometown tell me how the patterns grow. (Because nobody know that they exist). Winners Of The 2017 National Geographic Travel Photographer Of The Year
A photograph of an erupting volcano hit by a bolt of lightning has earned Sergio Tapiro Velasco of Mexico the prestigious title of 2017 National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year. Velasco will receive a 10-day trip for two to the Galápagos Archipelago with National Geographic Expeditions, as well as a $2500 prize. Velasco’s incredible photo was selected from over 15,000 entries from participants in more than 30 countries.
The power of nature – Grand Prize and 1st Prize Nature Category
Powerful eruption of Colima Volcano in Mexico on December 13th, 2015. That night, the weather was dry and cold, friction of ash particles generated a big lightning of about 600 meters that connected ash and volcano, and illuminated most of the dark scene. On last part of 2015, this volcano showed a lot of eruptive activity with ash explosions that raised 2-3 km above the crater. Most of night explosions produced incandescent rock falls and lightning not bigger than 100 meters in average.
