Photographer Benedict Redgrove has been granted unprecedented access to document past and present NASA technology, a sneak peek of which can be seen in the new issue of WIRED UK. Six years in the making, Redgrove captures everything from the space shuttle Atlantis and Vehicle Assembly Building, to the new Orion Crew Module, robot Valkyrie R5 and Boeing’s Starliner capsule. In fact the project is still ongoing, as it’s meant to culminate with the launch of the new SLS rocket in 2018. Continue reading »

Built in complete darkness, a complex city is being constructed. A wild swarm of Honeybees (Apis mellifera) arriving in the spring, is developing natural wax comb formations to support the colony’s future larvae, and food storage. When this colony is at it’s strongest, it will eventually divide. The majority of the bees swarming to a new location with the queen and begin the process of reproducing all over again, thus spreading their genes farther. Photographer Uses 160-Year-Old Camera To Take Eerily Beautiful Portraits
Giles Clement is a contemporary photographer who likes to do things the old-fashioned way, because the Nashville-based creative makes eerily beautiful portraits uses camera equipment made in the 1800s. Clement uses both tintype (a photograph taken as a positive on a thin tin plate) and ambrotype (an early type of photograph made by placing a glass negative against a dark background), two techniques that were popular in the 1850s and the 1860s, and as you can see from the pictures below, the end result is both haunting and arresting. Self-taught photographer Kelly Tan has an ongoing series, titled ‘I Have a Dream’, which features her young daughter casting shadows that are shaped like magical creatures and scenes. These imaginative shadows are cast on a plain gray wall, reflecting an alternate reality that is innocent and fun through the eyes of her daughter. How Soviet Space Dreams Became A Photographer’s Inspiration
The rocket and space program of the USSR, along with the exploration of the universe left its mark on the country. Obviously, it reflected on the people’s minds as well. Every other little boy wanted to be an astronaut. One of them was the photographer Ivan Mikhailov. As a child, he often stared at the stars, and thought of planets and space adventures, while sitting atop of a rocket-shaped slide near his house. Russian Photographer Captures Breathtaking Photos Of Milky Way Mirrored On Salt Flats In Bolivia

In May 2016, Russian photographer, Daniel Kordan, traveled to the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia – the world’s largest salt flat and took some photos that look out of this world. Using a Nikon D810A astrophotography DSLR and a 14-24mm f/2.8 Nikon lens, he managed to capture the Milky Way being reflected on the flooded salt flat at night, and the results are absolutely breathtaking. UK Astronomy Photographer Of The Year 2016 Shortlist
Gorgeous galaxies and stunning stars make up this selection of pictures from the shortlisted entries for this year’s Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year award. The winners will be announced on 15 September, and an exhibition of the winning images will be will be displayed in a free exhibition at the Royal Observatory Greenwich’s Astronomy Centre from 17 September.

This Wedding Photographer Turns You Into A Miniature Person
In Thailand, there’s a wedding photography business that’s attracting quite a bit of attention. It’s called คนตัวเล็ก, which literally translates to “Small Person.” The photographer’s specialty is making couples look like miniature figures living in a giant world. Each of the photographer’s pictures is a composite. After photographing the clients, the couple is cut out of their background and inserted into a small scale scene. A tilt-shift effect is then added to the photo to mimic the shallow depth of field look you get with macro photos. Continue reading »

Photographer Capture’s Kawau Birds Perched On Electric Wires In Tokyo
The Kawau are large seabirds, not unlike seagulls, that were pushed to the brink of extinction in Japan in the 1970s due to pollution. But in recent years they’ve come back – with a vengeance. Estimates now put the population of Kawau in Japan at as many as 150,000 and last year they were responsible for over 10 billion yen (about $100 million) in damages to the fishing industry because of their voracious appetite for eel and ayu (sweetfish).
