Terrifying Portraits of Indonesia’s Street-Performing Macaques

“Terror often stems not from the unknown, but from something familiar that has been subtly – but unmistakably – transformed. This certainly helps explain why Finnish photographer Perttu Saksa’s series, “A Kind of You”, is so unsettling. Saksa, a portrait photographer by trade, was appalled when, traveling in Jakarta in 2012, he first caught sight of macaque monkeys that had been manacled and forced into roles as “actors” in street performances. In the fall of last year, with the help of an Indonesian journalist, Saksa began investigating people known as “monkey masters” – entrepreneurs who train and rent monkeys to beggars. Street Pole Dances in Poland

Pole dancers in central Poland have been honing their skills out in the streets, throwing their legs around signposts to the surprise and delight of many a passer-by. The aim was to dispel the myth about pole dancing, a discipline often associated with strippers and nightclubs.

“The reactions of the people in the streets were very good, so we thought that this is a way to popularise the sport”, explained 27-year-old instructor Natalia Stanislawska. “Coming out in the street and practicing pole dancing poles on road signs, we want to break these stereotypes. The Pole dance is a real sport and even an art that combines acrobatics, gymnastics, and fitness. It takes a lot of strength and flexibility”.

Members of the “Avocadoo” club perform a pole dance on a street sign pole in Lodz, central Poland on June 27, 2013. Talk about a traffic stopper: three pole dancers in central Poland have been honing their skills out in the streets, throwing their legs around signposts to the surprise and delight of many a passerby. Combo: Provocative French Street Art

On a recent trip to Chernobyl, French street artist Combo left behind something memorable: a mural of The Simpsons. Combo is known for using iconic characters to make a statement, and this image continues the trend. The nuclear power plant in the background looks a lot more menacing here, but I also think there’s something really interesting about such a happy, cheery image juxtaposed against the aftermath of a horrible tragedy.
