Walter Schnackenberg was born in 1880 in Lauterberg, Germany, and became a prominent painter and illustrator.

At the age of 19, he moved to Munich to study art, first under Heinrich Knirr and then Franz von Stuck, both influential figures in the German art scene. His early work earned him recognition for his drawings and caricatures, which were published in art magazines such as *Jugend* and the satirical *Simplicissimus*. Schnackenberg’s style reflected a deep engagement with contemporary trends, combining bold lines and whimsical subject matter.

Throughout the early 20th century, Schnackenberg traveled frequently, including several visits to Paris. During a stay in Montparnasse in 1908-1909, he met Pablo Picasso and was greatly influenced by the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose vibrant depictions of Parisian nightlife left a lasting impact on Schnackenberg’s artistic approach. In addition to his illustrations, Schnackenberg expanded his repertoire to include stage set and costume design, contributing to the world of theatre.
