Amazing Epic Photos of the Old Country Houses of the Old Glasgow Gentry in 1878

Travel back to 1878, when Glasgow’s outskirts were adorned with elegant country estates belonging to the city’s affluent merchant elite, known as the Old Glasgow Gentry.

Surrounded by vast lawns, walled gardens, and centuries-old trees, these homes reflected the wealth and refined tastes of the 18th and 19th centuries. Scottish photographer Thomas Annan (1829–1887) documented these grand residences, creating a rare and invaluable visual record. Today, many of these historic houses have disappeared, been repurposed, or lie obscured beneath the city’s modern landscape.
