Illustrator Creates Pop‑surreal Paintings Turning Everyday Life Into Bright, Storybook‑style Adventures

Nathan Durfee is an American painter and illustrator based in Charleston, South Carolina, known for whimsical pop‑surreal narratives packed with quirky animals, kids, and oddball objects in bright, storybook colour.

A Vermont native and SCAD illustration graduate, he shifted from editorial work to full‑time painting around 2008–2009, developing large oil‑on‑panel pieces and small works on vintage postcards that mix Monet‑like atmosphere, Rockwell‑style storytelling and Dr. Seuss humour. Represented by galleries such as Robert Lange Studios, Abend Gallery and LeMieux Galleries, his sold‑out solo shows often re‑imagine classic paintings, stage “Dreamer” series about inner lives, and spotlight community and Lowcountry landscapes through his signature, very serious whimsy.
