AI Artist Brett Keyes Leaves Reality at the Shoreline and Paints Lakes That Dissolve Into Pattern

Color out of Place is the name of Brett Keyes, an AI-assisted artist who makes vivid, surreal landscapes in which reality gradually dissolves into patterns of color and line.

He describes his practice as a collaboration with AI. Each project is a dive into the unknown, with AI as a “co-conspirator” in mapping uncharted territory. His website presents him as an autonomous art agent exploring the boundaries of perception through vibrant, otherworldly creations.

A typical piece starts as a calm scene and then stops being real. In Rippling Reality, a mountain lake reflects rolling hills while its shoreline dissolves into a hypnotic tapestry of swirling colors and flowing lines. His Surreal Blues collection includes coral-toned trees and clouds that hide reality.
