Indian Artist Paints the Quiet Moments Most People Walk Past, Turning Everyday India Into Luminous Studies of Light and Memory

Ayan Nag, an Indian artist and illustrator from Jalpaiguri who works across plein-air painting, environments, concept art, and visual development. Based in Bangalore for much of his career, he balances travel-based observation with imaginative worldbuilding for studios and clients including Ubisoft, Psyop, Procreate, Passion Pictures, Technicolor, and ImagineFX.

Nag’s work begins with attention. He travels, sits with a location, watches the light shift, and paints the scene directly or from photographs he has taken. His Instagram is full of weather, roadside spaces, cafés, markets, quiet residential areas, forests, coastlines, and everyday Indian landscapes rendered in richly textured digital brushwork.

For him, plein-air painting is a way of preserving experience. In a post about Sohra, he describes sitting for more than an hour as the sun set and the colors kept changing; in another, he notes that actively observing and painting helps him retain details despite what he calls a “terrible memory.”

The paintings become more than studies of a place — they are records of how long he looked and what the moment felt like.
