Wildlife Photographer Of The Year 2015: First Glimpse Of Finalists’ Images
Wrestling Komodo dragons, a shark-repellent surfboard and a concerned gorilla are among the images captured on camera by finalists in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 competition. The competition attracted over 42,000 entries from both professionals and amateurs from 96 countries.
The winning images will be announced on 13 October, and an exhibition of the 100 shortlisted and winning images opens on 16 October at the Natural History Museum in London. These 100 images will also be part of an international tour spanning six continents, allowing millions of people to marvel at the beauty and variety of the natural world.
IBTimesUK presents a first look at ten of the finalists. A full gallery of winners will be published as soon as they are announced.
Finalist, Amphibians & Reptiles: Komodo Judo by Andrey Gudkov, Russia. The fight was fast and unexpected. Andrey had been to Indonesia’s Komodo National Park many times before, hoping to witness a battle between male Komodo dragons – the largest lizards in the world, measuring up to 2.5 metres (8 feet) long. Powerful Portraits of People Revealing Their “Invisible” Illnesses
Allie Cashel and Erica Lupinacci have started an impactful photo project that helps to give others a voice. As teens, both women were diagnosed with chronic illnesses that are, essentially, invisible. Cashel copes with chronic Lyme disease, while Lupinacci was diagnosed with Lupus during her senior year of high school. Both illnesses don’t show noticeable physical symptoms and are instead characterized by an internal struggle. “I have a few memories of being aware that Allie was sick,” Lupinacci told The Mighty. “She took a leave of absence from school for a while and we visited each other in the hospital a few times, but we never sat down and talked about what we were scared of or what was hard. And I think that’s pretty consistent of young people going through this.” Continue reading »

Recently, art director Hedvig Astrom Kushner embarked on a deliciously colorful project. “I make a lot of smoothies and discovered it works like mixing paint,” she told us in an email. Thousands Of Twins Descend Upon Ohio For The 40th Annual Twins Days Festival
It’s an annual event that attendees spend a year anticipating. And this weekend’s Twins Days, a festival celebrating twins in – where else? – Twinsburg, Ohio, was the biggest jamboree yet. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the festival had about 2,000 sets of twins turn out, from toddlers to adults. The Twins Days Festival, which began in 1975, is the largest annual gathering of twins and other multiples in the world.
