Sea Creatures Come out for Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade

Revelers pose at the 2013 Mermaid Parade at Coney Island on June 22, 2013 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Coney Island was hard hit by Superstorm Sandy but parade organizers, whose offices were flooded, were able to raise $100,000 on Kickstarter to fund the parade. The Mermaid Parade began in 1983 and features participants dressed as mermaids and other sea creatures while paying homage to the former tradition of the Coney Island Mardi Gras, which ran annually in the early fall from 1903-1954. Free Dive Hunters

Eyeconic Images is the partnership of DJ Struntz and Logan Mock-Bunting, two internationally renowned photographers with a passion for story-telling, image-making and the ocean.

Spearfishing is a type of hunting done with underwater guns, harpoons and strong line. Freediving is a type of breath-hold diving in which divers descend for the duration of one breath, without any SCUBA tanks or any breathing apparatus. The best freedivers can hold their breath for over five minutes and go deeper than 100 feet. The combination of both these skills makes a high adrenaline sport done by only a few brave souls…

Ren Chapman prepares for a dive with a loaded and ready speargun while another diver rests, holding onto a dive-line to stay in position against the current. “Blood in the water – Predive” Continue reading »

Ice Bubbles Create Picturesque Scene at the Foot of the Rocky Mountains

Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains on the North Saskatchewan River, the rare phenomenon occurs each winter in the man-made lake. The simple but stunning nature of the bubbles was captured on camera by a 40-year-old American photographer, Chip Phillips, who walked onto the lake for a better view of the scene. Ice bubbles occur during the months of November and March when the plants on the lake bed release methane gas, which freezes as it comes closer to the cold surface of the lake. Painted Mil Mi-24 Hind

The pictures are not of an American helicopter, but of a Russian MI-24 “Hind” assault helicopter. There are some pictures of it on display at an air show at Szentkirályszabadja, Hungary. Whether there are others like it, we don’t know, the the only pictures of this paint scheme are all on the same helicopter designated number 117. Continue reading »

Dale Irby, 63, accidentally wore the same brown v-necked tank top and big-collared disco shirt for two consecutive school photos from 1973. When he realised what he had done, wife Cathy dared him to repeat it for the third-year running. Hövding – Airbag for Cyclists

Hövding is a revolutionary bicycle helmet. Unlike other cycle helmets, Hövding is worn as a collar around your neck.

Hövding started out in 2005 as a master’s thesis by the two founders Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, who, at the time, were studying Industrial Design at the University of Lund.

The idea of developing a new type of cycle helmet was a response to the introduction of a law on mandatory helmet use for children up to the age of 15 in Sweden, which triggered a debate on whether cycle helmets should be mandatory for adults too. Anna and Terese saw their master’s thesis as an opportunity to find out whether it would be possible to develop a cycle helmet that people would be happy to wear – whether they had to or not.
