The 26th annual National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest is now accepting submissions. Official categories include: “Travel Portraits”, “Outdoor Scenes”, “Sense of Place” and “Spontaneous Moments”. The contest is accepting entries until June 30.

Fishermen in India’s Damodar River navigate the thick growth of algae caused by the reduction of fresh water, a result of global warming and irregular monsoon seasons. This situation poses a significant challenge for the locals living along the river, who struggle to survive amid the algal bloom, which prevents oxygen absorption and affects human health and habitats in the area. The shortlisted images will be on display at the Earth Photo exhibition, Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), London, from 17 June to 23 August 2023. Spectacular Winning Photos Of the 2022 Siena International Photo Awards
Here are the winning photos of the 2022 Siena International Photo Awards. Greek photographer Konstantinos Tsakalidis with “Woman from Evia” is the overall winner of this year. The shot captures the desperation of Kritsiopi Panayiota, an 81-year-old woman, as the flames are approaching her home during the serious forest fires that hit the country in summer 2021 and caused extensive environmental damage.
The image, selected from tens of thousands of images sent by photographers from 140 countries, will be on display in Siena from October 1st to November 20th, along with the winning photos of the 12 categories of the SIPA 2022, the Creative Photo Awards, Drone Photo Awards and the solo exhibitions of Danish Siddiqui (Indian photographer killed on 16 July 2021 while documenting the combat between Afghan troops and the Taliban), as well as exhibitions featuring the work of Ami Vitale, Dan Winters and Peter Mather.

Kritsiopi Panayiota, 81-years-old, reacts as a wildfire approaches her house. Amid the hottest and most long-lasting heatwave in the last 30 years, with temperatures reaching 47°C, hundreds of forest fires broke out across the country, severely hitting Greece’s second largest island. Thousands of residents and tourists were evacuated by boat. The fire, which raged uncontrollably for a week in the tinder-dry pine forests, destroyed more than 50,000 hectares of forest area and agricultural land, burned dozens of houses, and killed many animals. Spectacular Winning Images of The 2022 Australia’s National Photographic Portrait Prize
Wayne Quilliam’s Silent Strength, a photograph of Aurukun man Eric Yunkaporta, has won the 2022 national photographic portrait prize. Quilliam says the capture of Yunkaporta in ceremonial headwear is akin to a trickle of water merging into a small stream, then into the ocean.

As Melbourne struggles through many days of restrictions, with limited options to play and learn for the kids, four-year-old astronaut Mia puts on her homemade space suit and helmet and goes on exploration missions in the familiar neighbourhood, using her imagination to turn the mundane world around her into an exciting adventure. Story of the year: Saving Forests with Fire
Indigenous Australians strategically burn land in a practice known as cool burning, in which fires move slowly, burn only the undergrowth, and remove the buildup of fuel that feeds bigger blazes. The Nawarddeken people of West Arnhem Land have been practising controlled cool burns for tens of thousands of years and see fire as a tool to manage their 1.39m-hectare homeland.

Stunning Snapshots of America in Crisis in the 1970s
By the late 1960s, the American landscape was ravaged by decades of unchecked land development, blighted by urban decay in the big cities, and plagued by seemingly unstoppable air, noise, and water pollution.
In November 1971, the newly created Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a monumental photodocumentary project to “photographically document subjects of environmental concern” in the United States. The collection, now at the National Archives, resulted in a collection of more than 20,000 photographs by its conclusion in 1978.

With support from the first EPA administrator, William Ruckelshaus, project director Gifford D. Hampshire contracted well-known photographers to work for the EPA on the project. Estimates of the number involved range between 70 and 120, and they were organized geographically, with each photographer working in a particular area in which they were already active.
