Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People’s Republic of China, was a controversial figure. His Marxist–Leninist theories, military strategies and communist ideas, especially his “Great Leap Forward” campaign, where he attempted to rapidly transform China’s economy from an agrarian economy to an industrial one, led to widespread famine resulting in the death of an estimated 45 million people. Finland born, Helsinki based artist Riikka Hyvönen sees an inspiring myriad of colors that tell a story. Her art combines hyperrealism painting with sculptural elements, pop and kitsch styles, taking the pain that we have all experienced at some point and making it strangely alluring. She calls bruises “kisses”, specifically worn by roller derby girls, of which she collects photographs and then reinterprets into large-scale artworks. At Milan’s Università Bicocca, italian sculptor Edoardo Tresoldi has collaborated with artist Gonzalo Borondo to realize ‘chained’, a mixed media work that interacts with architecture of the site. On the red façade of the building, Borondo has painted five male figures that embrace each other in a circular configuration. Created by artist Agnė Kišonaitė, ‘Giant Lipstick’ is made of 5000+ used lipstick tubes, measuring a height of 2.5 meters with an overall weight of 200kg. Four tubes of rouge are sold every second in the world, and considering the amount of packaging left which cannot be recycled, so I wanted to create something which triggered our society to think more seriously about consumerism and the types of products they are purchasing, and bring attention towards the need to reduce waste.
