The Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2014 Contest

1
“Aurora over a glacier lagoon”. A vivid green overheaded aurrora pictured in Iceland’s Vatnajokull National Park reflected almost symetrically in Jokulsrlon Glacier lagoon. A complete lack of wind and currrent combin in this sheltred lagoon scene to crete an arresting mirror effect giving the image a sensation of utter stillness. Despite theis there is motion on a suprising scale, as the loops and arcs of the aurora are shaped by the shifting forces of the Earth’s magnetic field. James Woodend of Great Britain won the grand prize with the image, beating out more than 2,500 other entries. The Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2014 contest is judged by the Royal Observatory Greenwich and BBC Sky at Night magazine. Costica Acsinte was a Romanian war photographer who, after discharge, opened a studio in Slobozia, Romania. Around 5,000 of his glass plates were purchased by the Ialomita County Museum and in 2013, Cezar Popescu started to digitize them. (Photo by Costica Acsinte Archive/Jane Long) Continue reading »

Best Wedding Present Ever? Photographer Remakes Hollywood Posters Starring Bride and Groom

In a world where love is patient and love is kind, one couple refused to play by the rules. This summer, they’re going to the chapel and someone’s going to get … buried!

OK, so it was actually last fall, and no one died in a fiery blast. But these parodies of Hollywood blockbuster posters for the marriage of David DiCicco and Rachael Batts are still epic enough to make Michael Bay consider a second career as a wedding planner.

The posters were the work of the Virginia couple’s close friend, Nashville-based photographer and designer Andres Martinez. After helping them create a Casablanca-themed save-the-date card, Martinez spent about a month creating a series of posters starring DiCicco and Batts, who displayed them at their wedding reception. Photographer Captures American Apparel Ads in their Gritty Natural Environment

One of the most ubiquitous sights in Los Angeles is the American Apparel billboard. They are mostly small signs, found in strategic neighborhoods such as Silverlake and Echo Park and featuring a young, attractive women in Dov Charney’s products. The billboards reflect a vintage softcore aesthetic that make the ads nearly unmissable.

Los Angeles-based artist Thomas Alleman set out to capture these tiny billboards in their natural environment. The end result is “The American Apparel,” a gritty look at the role these ads play in the streets of Los Angeles. There are billboards overlooking homeless squats, perching over a street corner, hiding behind buildings and looking down on alleyways.
