Powerful Portraits of People Revealing Their “Invisible” Illnesses
Allie Cashel and Erica Lupinacci have started an impactful photo project that helps to give others a voice. As teens, both women were diagnosed with chronic illnesses that are, essentially, invisible. Cashel copes with chronic Lyme disease, while Lupinacci was diagnosed with Lupus during her senior year of high school. Both illnesses don’t show noticeable physical symptoms and are instead characterized by an internal struggle. “I have a few memories of being aware that Allie was sick,” Lupinacci told The Mighty. “She took a leave of absence from school for a while and we visited each other in the hospital a few times, but we never sat down and talked about what we were scared of or what was hard. Advertising agency Leo Burnett Switzerland created a tongue-in-cheek campaign that’ll appeal to both selfie and fine art lovers. Three posters feature the iconic artists Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Albrecht Dürer snapping their picture using the Samsung NX Mini camera – the tagline for the campaign is For Self-Portraits. Men around the world are putting beautiful arrangements of flowers into their beards.
It’s hard to identify who started the trend, however, one of the pictures on our list dates back to 1977. This probably means that the idea was born even earlier with the hippie movement and John Phillips’ song “San Francisco”. The line “If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair”, inspired thousands of young people from all over the world to travel to San Francisco, wearing flowers in their hair and now, apparently, in their beards.
